Guy Marion Harvley

SPARTANBURG, SC-- Guy Marion Harvley, 94, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, December 10, 2012. Born October 4, 1918, in Greenville, SC, he was the husband of the late Mary Locke Harvley and son of the late J. C. and Elizabeth Freeman Harvley.
A World War II veteran of the U. S. Army, he served two years in the European theater. Mr. Harvley retired in 1984 from Norfolk Southern Corp. after 36 years of service, was a graduate of Greenville High School Class of 1936, and attended Furman University and Draughon School of Business.
He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church and the Royal Sunday School Class. Formerly, he was active at Trinity United Methodist Church where he was chairman of the Administrative Board for three years.
His community involvement includes: past member of The Piedmont Club, active member of the YMCA for over 30 years, a member of the Spartanburg Sertoma Club for 48 years where he received numerous awards, he was also past president of the club, past governor of Sertoma International of South Carolina and recipient of the Distinguished Governor Award. He was instrumental in organizing the Sertoma Football Jamboree in 1984 and establishing student scholarships with the Jamboree proceeds. He served as chairman of the Scholarship Program for 16 years and was a past member of the Executive Sertoma Club. He was past president of the Tri-County Transportation Association where he received the "Man of the Year" Award, was a certified member of the American Society of Traffic and Transportation, and a volunteer for Mobile Meals for many years.
Surviving are his daughters, Annette H. Rogers and husband Steve of Matthews, NC, and Mary H. Berry and husband Dr. Roy of Spartanburg, SC; sons, Guy M. Harvley Jr. and wife Joan of Anderson, SC, and James F. Harvley and wife Kay of Greenville, SC; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 10:00-10:45 AM Thursday, December 13, 2012, at Morningside Baptist Church Welcome Center. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely. Burial with military honors will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Morningside Baptist Church, 897 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302; or Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
The family is at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Roy Berry, 106 Ashford Avenue, Spartanburg, SC 29307.

Mary, I'm sorry to near of your dear father's death. What a treasure he was to the Spartanburg community and his family...and for so many years.
