Mauger Givnish Funeral Home - Malvern Obituary

Tim McCarrick, age 50 passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends, on Sunday December 16 after a 3 year courageous battle with cancer. Born March 30, 1962, Tim was the son of the late William T McCarrick and Constance Powers Winoski. Tim was the loving husband of Marybeth (Duffy) devoted father of daughters Kathleen and Erin.
Tim was raised in King of Prussia and attended Mother of Divine Providence School class of 1976 and Malvern Preparatory School class of 1980. While a Malvern Student, Tim began his mastery of the violin and was a member of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and performed in Europe with the International String Festival. Tim continued to pursue his love of music through study at West Chester University where he received his Bachelor's Degree. He pursued graduate studies at West Chester in theory and composition and teaching certification at Immaculata University.
Tim was employed as an Orchestra and Music Technology Editor at J.W. Pepper at the time of his death. Tim previously worked as an adjunct faculty member and conductor of the Albright College orchestra and jazz band and in 1990 became the inaugural music director at Malvern Prep and established a music curriculum, which still flourishes today, thanks to his vision. Tim was the conductor of the All Catholic Orchestra for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia from 1993-1997 where he met fellow music director Marybeth, his wife of 18 years.
Tim's eclectic musical background includes performance on several stringed instruments in many musical styles. He was trained in violin performance, music education and music composition. He began playing the piano at age 5, moved to guitar at age 10 and fell in love with strings at age 12. Tim had a tremendous talent and could play any piece he heard note for note. He began classical violin study at age 14 but still loved to play rock and roll guitar. Tim was a founding member of the Rhythmic Motions, whose band members became his life-long friends. Together they played Beatles, Stones and Motown and more.
Tim created orchestral arrangements including Telemann's Concerto for String Orchestra, Fiddle Like the Dickens, Hanukkah Habanera, and Led Zeplin's Kashmir, which are being performed by youth orchestras internationally. His writings on fiddle playing and fiddlers have been published by Fiddler Magazine, Fiddler Sessions and on his own website, irishfiddle.com.
Tim was a frequently attended the Malvern Retreat house with the Pius X Division of the Men of Malvern with his father and brothers. Tim had a strong connection to his Irish heritage and traced his lineage back to the 5th century. He has made frequent and memorable trips there with his wife and daughters where he was able to meet many of the musicians he had interviewed. Primarily a patient of the Paoli Cancer Center where he received excellent care, Tim also contributed to the medical body of knowledge through his participation in clinical cancer treatment trials at Memorial Sloan Kettering, Fox Chase Cancer Center and the National Institute of Health.
In addition to his wife and daughters, Tim is survived by his mother, brothers William J of Bonita Springs, Florida, and Michael and his wife Eileen of Glen Mills; sisters Patty McCarrick-Dix and her husband Steve of Collegeville and Kathy Feeney and her husband Michael of Audubon. Tim was dearly loved and will be missed by 10 nieces and 6 nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing to be held on Friday, December 21 from 6pm-9pm and on Saturday at 9am until 10:30 at Mauger-Givinish funeral home at 24 Monument Road in Malvern. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church 104 Channing Avenue, Malvern, at 11am.
