EASTHAMPTON – Alfred J. "Fred" Hoynoski, 86, of 4 Raymond Ave., Easthampton, died Feb. 11, 2013, at Hadley at Elaine Care and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.
Fred was born April 10, 1926, in Whately, the son of Charles and Julia Hoynoski.
He graduated from Deerfield High School in June 1944. He was a self-employed tobacco grower and then a supervisor for M & M in the late 1950's and early 1960's. He then worked at the University of Massachusetts for 25 years in the physical plant, retiring in 1988 as a professional project manager.
Fred was a Whately assessor for nine years, a planning board member and served on various other committees for the Town of Whately. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Greenfield, the Polish American Citizen's Club in South Deerfield and a parish member of the former St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church which is now Holy Family Parish, where he served as a parish council member and a Eucharistic Minister.
Fred loved to work in his gardens and liked to go polka dancing, especially on Sunday afternoons, picking up Dorothy and Stephen Sojkowski and going to the polish picnics. He also liked to travel, especially to Maine, North Carolina and Bermuda and he especially enjoyed the Edward Forman Polka Cruise.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Harubin Rup whom he married on Nov. 24, 2001. He is also survived by two step-children and four step-grandchildren, Christie Rockey and her two sons, Bradley and Brett, of Scarborough, Maine, and Jeffrey Rup and his wife Alice and their two children, Roman and Zoe Rup of Holly Springs, N.C.; his brothers, Edwin Hoynoski of Suffield, Conn., Chester Hoynoski and his wife Mary also of Suffield, Conn., William Hoynoski of Sunderland, Stanley of Whately and Robert and his wife Louise of South Deerfield; his brother-in-law Richard Harubin and his wife Jan of Hatfield; many nieces and nephews; and his godchild whom he was very fond of, Stevie A. Sojkowski and his wife Sue of Easthampton.
He was predeceased by his first wife Lydia Trzcienski, his brother Eugene Hoynoski of Hadley and his sister Sally Goller also of Hadley.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 9 a.m. from the Wrisley Funeral Home, 90 Sugarloaf St., South Deerfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Holy Family Parish, 29 Sugarloaf St., South Deerfield, with the Rev. Philippe Roux officiating. Burial will be in the St. Stanislaus Cemetery, South Deerfield. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday, Feb. 15, from 4 to 7 p.m.
