Frances Laycock Obituary

Laycock, Frances Janet Services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Shamrock, TX with Rev Jarrod Neal, pastor, and Brother Joe G. Jernigan, pastor of Calvary Christian Fellowship in Shamrock, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon. Frances Janet Caperton Laycock passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2013. Janet and her husband, Kenneth, moved to The Edgemere Retirement Community, Dallas, Texas in 2004 from Canyon, Texas, where they had made their home for 38 years. Janet was cared for in peace and dignity in her last years in The Plaza at Edgemere after a long struggle with vascular dementia. Janet was born in Shamrock, Texas on November 25, 1928, the daughter of Virgil Louise Porter Caperton and James Hardy Caperton, members of pioneer ranching and business families in Wheeler County. After graduating from Shamrock High School, in 1946, she attended the University of Texas in Austin. An active student, she served as president of the Home Economics Club, twice serving as a delegate to the national convention. Janet chaired the Dormitory Advisors Council, was president of the Texas Panhandle Area Club, and served on the Dean's Advisory Council. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics with majors in clothing, textiles, and interior design. At the insistence of her father, she returned to her hometown of Shamrock to teach school for one year. It was there she met a fellow teacher, Kenneth Laycock. They were married in the Caperton family home on March 13, 1952. Janet and Kenneth moved to Canyon, Texas in 1965. She was one of the organizers of West Texas State University Wives, and served as its president. She was a founding member of the Panhandle Plains Museum Auxiliary and an Endowed Member of both the West Texas A&M Pheonix Club and the University of Texas Ex-Students Association. She was a member of United Methodist Women, University Study Club of Canyon, and the American Association of University Women. Janet taught home economics at Canyon Junior High for 15 years until her retirement. Janet's life-long membership in the United Methodist Church started in Shamrock. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Canyon for 38 years and was a member of University Park United Methodist Church in Dallas at the time of her death. Janet lived life with a genuine interest in other people and their welfare. While gracious and gentle, she also had a keen sense of humor. Janet's wit and candor often caught people off-guard as a pleasant surprise. Dedicated to her family, she guided her children with education, patience, and wisdom. Her humor and positive attitude remained with her to the end of her life. Her values will travel down the generations. Janet was preceded in death by her mother and father, and her sister, Louise Coffman. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Kenneth Laycock, who dedicated himself to Janet's care as her health declined. She is also survived by her son Keith Laycock, daughter-in-law, Deborah Mast Laycock, daughter Laura Laycock Noe, and son-in-law Dr. Carol Noe, all of Dallas. Janet was immensly proud of each of her five grandchildren: Mason Laycock, Paige Laycock, Laura Katherine Laycock, Lillie Noe and Robert Noe. Other surviving family members include sisters-in-law Helen Laycock of Kingsland, and Maudie Laycock of Canyon, brothers-in-law, Dr. Raymond Laycock of Pampa, and Dr. Royce Laycock and wife Norma of Dallas, as well as beloved nieces and nephews. Janet will be fondly remembered by friends from Shamrock, Austin, Levelland, Canyon, Amarillo, and at the Edgemere Retirement Community in Dallas. The family gives its heartfelt thanks to all the care givers at The Plaza at Edgemere. We are forever grateful. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon and from 1:15 to 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the Shamrock First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Heart Association, the Alzheimer's Foundation, the First United Methodist Church in Shamrock, or to the charity of your choice. Although no services are scheduled in Dallas, a reception will be planned at a later time.
