Lester Jones Obituary

YORKTOWN, VA - Lester M. Jones passed away at his home in York County on Friday, March 29, 2013 at the age of 92. He was one month shy of his 93rd birthday. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Doris Jones; his brother Clyde and two sisters, Lucille and Doris. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his brothers, John, Bill and David Jones; and one sister Francis Jones Cox respectively. He also leaves behind his two sons, Richard Jones of Hampton, VA and Alan Jones and his wife Donna of Gloucester, VA; two granddaughters Michelle Alexander of Newport News, VA, and Krystal Alexander of Gloucester, VA; and five great-grandchildren. Lester was a WWII Veteran. He served in the United States Marine Corp from 1939 to 1945 and received an Honorable Discharge as Sergeant in 1945. He was an expert rifleman and sharpshooter. He retired as a steam engineer with the United States Coast Guard, Yorktown VA; and in the same capacity from Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, VA. He was an avid gardener and loved nothing more than to share his bountiful harvest with family and neighbors. A funeral service will be held at Noon on Wednesday, April 3, in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 pm on Tuesday, April 2, in the funeral home.

Not sure what to say?

Dear Alan & Rick,
Your father was a kind and caring man. I shall never forget when he & Rick helped to "rig up" a television for a friend of mine who was living in a Hospice at that time. They used car antennas to fix the television so that it was usable-imagine that! Mark was quite ill, so having a television in his room was quite nice. The wonderful part of this story was that Rick, nor his father even knew Mark. They were truly doing God's work. I pray that God Will Cup You in His Hands Gently, Respectfully, Cynthia Phillips

I will miss Great Uncle Lester. I remember the first time I meet him when I was a child on a trip to Michigan to see His parents. When we pulled up he walked out the door and I turn to my mother and asked how did Grandfather Jones ( Clyde Jones his Brother) get here before us. And my mother said that is your Uncle Lester. From that day till now I always thought and remember him. He was a great uncle and will be missed in our home.

Alan and the Jones Family, What a wonderful man Mr. Jones was. I enjoyed knowing him and working with him at Eastern State Hospital. In our many chats I learned that my husband and I already knew his son Alan. Its a small world. Cherish those precious memories. You all are in our thoughts and prayers.

Al and I are finding comfort in knowing that Pop is with Mom now. We brought him home which was where he wanted to be. He passed away peacefully with his boys by his side.
We will miss him terribly, but he is happy now. Love you Pop!
