Austin artist Albert James Bonar - who was known to his friends and signed his paintings as Jimmy Jalapeeno - died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 66.

I've been looking to see if I could re-connect with Jimmy, whom I knew Latin class in high school. He was the one who, when asked 'what will you do when you finish school?' said 'be an artist'. Until that time, I was unaware that one could actually do that. So, it seems that we two have been in the hill country, being artists and painting the landscape for all these years but never knew about the other. My best wishes to his family and friends and I offer the advice to keep in touch while you can.

Jimmy, my love, my funny valentine, I honor you everyday. I miss the jokes and the stupid puns and the love we shared.
Your loving wife.

Adios Jimmy. I will always remember the good times I spent with you in Austin, Amarillo, and Washington, DC mostly in the late 70's, and especially on W. 9-1/2 Street with Rick, Eric, David Elliott and everyone else.

He was just a good one - an original, a kittie man, and an all around truly nice person. And while I didn't see him much, I liked knowing he was there. We are thinking about you Belinda.

Just view Mr. Bonar's art and Photography. What a great gift me left us to enjoy for centuries to come. Thank you Mr. Bonar for the beautiful thought on life. One artist to another.

It's been a long time ago, my memory has lost much of the details, but when one of our co-workers at the Texas Historical Commission passed away, Jimmy painted a very nice portrait of him in memory that hung for years in the break area of the History Programs Division near where Jim had his work area and dark room. He was a very caring person, that painting was a small example that left an impression on me.

I liked the painting of the cow you had in your house in 1970 something. Then, when you told me you had also gone to U.C., Davis, it all made sense. Didn't know you well but that was enough.

Old friend. Seems like that 9 1/2 Street gang is shrinking a bit. So many good memories, that it is difficult to select just one or two. You always brought me down to earth and reminded me of our days in Austin - and at the UT Art Department - in the best possible way. We were all pulling for you, and feel very fortunate enough that we could spend a little time together.

As an Austin artist, seeing your works inspired me to paint 'from the heart' as you did in your paintings.
