Charles Callery died peacefully at home June 16, 2013. He was born July 3, 1920 in Baltimore, Maryland to William and Irene Daly Callery.
He went to Gilman School in Baltimore, attended The University of Virginia and graduated from Princeton University with a B.S. in aeronautical engineering in 1944. Commissioned in the Army Combat Engineers in World War II, he served in the Military Government in Japan. Charles Callery came to Texas in 1947, where he joined his uncle's oil company, F.A. Callery, Inc. In 1966 he formed his own company, Callery Exploration and remained active in the oil business and real estate until he retired in 1998.
Charles Callery enjoyed tennis, golf, dancing and bridge throughout his lifetime with a wonderful group of old friends. He graced everyone with his charm and wit, always making an effort to put others at ease. Known to his daughters' friends as "Dahsie," he had a great sense of fun and loved to incite children and dogs to mischief. Beloved by all, he was a gentleman with a soft spot for newcomers and the less fortunate.
Preceded in death by his brother, William and sister, Ann Callery, he is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Caroline Staub Callery; his daughters, Nancy Callery and husband, Darrell Bowling; Madeleine Callery Hussey; and Catherine Callery Zdunkewicz and husband, Richard Zdunkewicz; as well as his grandchildren, Caroline Staub Hussey, Matthew Lidecker Hussey, Nancy Callery Zdunkewicz and Todd Charles Zdunkewicz. He also leaves behind his beloved dogs, Mia and Diego.
The family is grateful for the devoted attention of Mike Lamb and for his loving caregivers: Rosario Velasquez Catarina de Leon, Ericka Ferrioli, Judy Martin, Tristina Martin and Zulema Vargas. They also appreciate the years of sensitive care by Dr. Susan Vogel, Dr. Bhakti Gidvani, Dr. Shahin Tavacoli, Dr. Joanne Kim and Ani Ble, RN.
There will be a private graveside service for the family. Family and friends are invited to a reception at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the Bayou Club, 8550 Memorial Drive.
