ARTHUR LIZEE Obituary

LIZEE, ARTHUR FRANCIS "BUD" age 83, died at his home in Birmingham, Alabama, on Sunday, June 16, 2013, surrounded by his family. Born November 5, 1929, in Yakima, Washington, to George and Eleanor Lizee, he graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, and attended University of Washington and General Motors Institute. Bud served in World War II in the Army Air Corps in the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan, until 1949, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He lettered in four varsity sports and was a member of the gymnastics team and the diving team. In later years, he enjoyed softball, golf, fishing, water skiing, and travel, and continued diving and swimming well into his eighties. After his military service, Bud worked at the Bremerton Navy Yard, for Curtiss-Wright, and for General Motors Corporation, retiring as a plant engineer after 25 years. He was a member of the American Institute of Plant Engineers. From New Zealand to France to musty Alabama crawl spaces, there was not a mechanical system he did not want to inspect. On August 20, 1966, he married Alice Catherine Bego in Santa Barbara, California. He served as a Junior Achievement Leader, an Indian Guides parent, and girls' softball coach. Survivors include his wife, Alice, his children, Cheryl Ayers, Jack (Sally) Lizee, Denise (Scott) Forbes, Renee Lizee of Washington state, and Erik (Michele) Lizee, of Birmingham, Alabama. He was the beloved grandfather to Christopher (Kim) Fraser, Denise Fraser, and Luke (Holly) Ayers, Julie (Ian) Salas, Heather (Jon) Crone, Sarah Lizee, and Maximilian Lizee and great-grandfather to Ashley, Gabe, Marie, Gracie, David, Toby, and Jackson. He was preceded in death by his brother Byron Lizee, his sister Darlene Lizee, his grandson David Ayers, and very recently by his sister-in-law Gloria Bego. He will be greatly missed by his brothers-in-law Robert (Mary) Bego and Eugene Bego, as well as by his nieces and nephews Karen, Byron, Cheryl, and Julie; Mark and Anne; Kathleen, Christine, Gregory, Jennifer, and Michael. Bud never met a stranger and made fast friends who include the Schieferle's, the Hawthorne's, the Bradley's, the Sales, the Sherman's, the Pickrel's, the Palace's, the Urban's, the Schmidt's, the Large's, the Massara's, the Campbell's, the McKernan's, Carol Chamberlain, Joan Harbaugh, and Catherine Young. Bud will be especially remembered for his loyalty to family and friends, tenacity in the face of home improvement, and countless "Bud-isms" that will forever enrich our vocabularies. Services will be held at on 3 p.m., Saturday, June 22, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham, 4300 Hampton Heights Drive, Birmingham, Alabama 35209. Relatives and friends are welcome at the service and the reception immediately following it. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are welcome and should be mailed to one of Bud's favorite places, McWane Science Center, 200 19th Street North, Birmingham, Alabama 35203.

Goodbye, Bud. We feel lucky to have known you. Our boys, your Erik and our Rob and Bill, played together as toddlers and neighbors in Goleta; and you and Bob worked at General Motors. We have kept in touch and visited through the years, and we will miss your smile, enthusiasm and friendship.

I will miss my dad greatly. He was always there if one of us needed him. I so looked forward to his yearly visits. We all planned our summers around his visits because we all enjoyed this time together so much. So proud of all that he accomplished in his life. Love him always. Cheryl
