Melvin Clinton Freeman Sr. Lieutenant Commander Melvin Clinton Freeman Sr., United States Navy, Retired, passed away at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, Virginia on July 17, 2013 at the age of 81. LCDR Freeman was born in Lee County, Alabama, on August 24, 1931, the son of the late Cecil L. and Irene Parker Freeman. He graduated Beauregard High School in 1949 and later went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from Auburn University, Alabama in 1978. As an active duty armed services member for 22 years, LCDR Freeman was awarded numerous commendations and medals including The Bronze Star Medal, Korean Service Medal with 4 stars, Vietnam Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and Joint Service Commendation Medal. LCDR Freeman is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Miles Freeman. Upon his retirement from the USN they resided in Opelika, Alabama for 36 years where he worked for the State of Alabama, Employment Service and was an active member of the Opelika Downtown Lions Club. Since Melvin and Dorothy moved to Charlottesville, Virginia in 2003, he has been a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. LCDR Freeman is also survived by his children, Stephanie F. Carpenter of Madison, Florida; M. Clinton Freeman Jr. of Montgomery, Alabama; Antony C. Freeman of Bayou Vista, Texas; and Susan F. Weiner of Charlottesville, Virginia; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Dallas L. Freeman of Auburn, Alabama; a sister, Geraldine F. Cochran of Port Charlotte, Florida. There will be a memorial celebration at the home of Susan Weiner on the evening before the funeral services and burial at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. The dates and times will be provided in a separate announcement when available. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in the name of Melvin C.
