Caryl Frawley Obituary

Caryl J. Frawley, 72, of Louisville passed away on August 17, with loving family by her side. Caryl was born to the late Elbert and Ethel Johnson in Louisville, Kentucky, on October 20, 1940. She graduated from Eastern High School and earned her B.A. with honors in Social Services from Syracuse University. She attended Emory University, and then moved to New York to work for Eastern Airlines as a flight attendant. She met her husband of 47 years, Thomas Frawley, in Manhattan, eventually settling in Syracuse, where they lived for 34 years and raised two children.

She worked as a county legislator for three terms, serving Onondaga county's second district. After retiring from politics, she worked in public affairs for Niagara Mohawk. Following a fulfilling career, she enjoyed creating a website from her home in Louisville, www.neatwomeninc.com, which was inspired by and was dedicated to the women Caryl has known throughout her life.

Caryl was active in the community, serving on several boards, including the following: Onondaga County Public Library (President), Mental Health Association of Central New York (President), Syracuse Chiefs baseball team (the first woman ever elected to the board), NETWORK, New Energy to Work Out Racial Kinks, along with numerous other not-for-profit and government service organizations.

Caryl was recognized with numerous special achievements and awards, including the following: elected to represent New York State at the National Conference on Families; Syracuse Post-Standard "Woman of Achievement in Politics" Award; Syracuse University's "Dean's Distinguished Alumni" Award; U.S. Jaycettes "Outstanding Women in Government" Award; Beta Sigma Phi "Woman of the Year" Award; Onondaga County Volunteer Firemen's Association "Meritorious Service" Award; and the Clay/Liverpool VFW "Outstanding Citizen of the Year" Award.

Caryl is survived by her husband, Thomas (Tom), of Louisville; and two children: Matthew, his wife Jill, and their three children Christopher, Andrew and Elizabeth of Pewee Valley, and Catherine, her husband Bill, and their two children, Billy and Cathleen of Aurora, Colorado. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

Caryl was an outgoing and generous person with a kind-hearted spirit. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a unique gift of connecting with others. She will be dearly missed by family and the many friends she made along her life's journey.

A memorial mass in celebration of her life will be held at the Church of the Epiphany, 914 Old Harrods Creek Road, Louisville, KY, 40223 on September 13, at 10 a.m. The mass will be followed by a reception for family and friends.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Caryl's memory to the HHT Foundation International Inc., P.O. Box 329, Monkton, MD 21111 (www.hht.org) or Contact Community Services, 6311 Court Street Road, East Syracuse, NY 13057.

Memories and Condolences
for Caryl Frawley

Not sure what to say?

Caryl took care of so many of us. We laughed especially seeing each other early in the morning running with rollers in her hair. Caryl was my special person in seeking and getting a job at NiMo...she was always there to help and encourage. Never saw her without a smile...she never stopped being Caryl and that is a compliment. Special thoughts to Catherine, Matthew and Tom. She will be missed.

One of the greatest blessings of my life was being able to call Caryl "friend," even for the few years we knew each other nearly 25 years ago. Kind, gracious, thoughtful, wise. She was a blessing to all who knew her. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I am so very sorry to read of Caryl's passing. In the mid '70s when I moved back here from NYC, Caryl took me on a tour of Liverpool and talked about her concerns at how fast it was growing given its limited infrastructure at the time. I was just making new friends and getting reacquainted with my community after being away and she was so generous with her time. She was such a dynamic, caring and fun person! We were lucky to have her as an elected official and as a friend.
