Clifford Wright Obituary

Clifford Ramsey Wright, Jr. passed away on August 11, 2013 in the house in Montecito, CA where he had lived for 54 years.

Born in 1925 in Cincinnati, OH, he attended Cincinnati Country Day School, Phillips Academy Andover, and Yale University. His studies were interrupted by induction into the US Army in 1943. He served in the Army Signal Corps for three years in France and Germany. Returning to civilian life, he met and married Eleanor Bradley White of Cleveland, OH. The couple lived near New Haven, CT, while he finished studies at Yale. Cliff then worked in Groton, CT on the Nautilus, the first nuclear powered submarine. The family moved to Cincinnati in 1954 where Cliff worked at the Fifth Third Bank, then to Santa Barbara in 1959, where Cliff bought a Ventura marine sales company which he renamed Wright Marine Sales. He operated Wright Marine for 36 years, retiring in 1996.

Cliff joined Eleanor in supporting Santa Barbara social services including Phoenix House, Casa Dorinda, Santa Barbara Mental Health Association, and Santa Barbara City College. Eleanor died in 2007 ending their 60 years of marriage. Though plagued with rheumatoid arthritis most of his life, he possessed an unfailingly optimistic outlook of life. More than anything else, he enjoyed people and travelled regularly to visit friends and maintain relationships, some of which endured through all of his 88 years.

Cliff is survived by his brother Gordon Wright, his children: Clifford III, Morris, Glen, William King, Kathy Sundown, his twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Remembrances may be made to Phoenix House of Santa Barbara or the Santa Barbara Zoo.

Dear C 111 and Kathy, this is Saleem Jawad. 1969 I stayed with your wonderful family. Still have fond memories. Kathy and C111 on horses, beautiful home and beautiful family. I moved back home to Oman.
I just found out about your dad through Google. I remembered him today so thought to look him up and say hello to him. I used to call him once in a while late 2000s.
Please accept my deepest condolence.
