LORAIN - Jesse Gonzales, 92, of Lorain, died Thursday, September 26, 2013 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain.
He was born November 22, 1920 in Mexico and had resided in Lorain most of his life.
Jesse graduated from Lorain High School with the class of 1940B. He served in the US Army Company G 507th Parachute Infantry 17th Airborne Division in central Europe during World War II. He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon w/1 Bronze Star, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Ribbon and American Theater Ribbon.
Jesse worked as a painter for a painting subcontractor at US Steel in Lorain for over 30 years. He also was an insurance agent for Equitable Insurance.
He was a member of the Church of St. Peter in Lorain, the church Holy Name Society, a life member of VFW Post #451 in Lorain and Alcoholics Anonymous. He played the trumpet and sang in the Jimmy Dulio Band and the Three Coins Band and played at many AA dances for many years.
He is survived by his children Cecelia Van Horn (David) of Lorain, Linda Emmons (David) of Westchester, PA, Carmen Norton (Scott) of Tucson, AZ, Sharon ""Kelly"" Flores of Lorain, Jesse Gonzales (Annetta) and Dino Gonzales (Beth), all of Vermilion, 18 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, brothers Ignatius, Fred, Arthur and Ray and sisters Mary Jones and Teresa Bodjo and sister-in-law Connie Versace. He was preceded in death by his wife Josephine Gonzales (nee Dongarra) January 13, 2011, parents Jesus and Teresa Gonzales (nee Moreno), brothers Manuel and Joe Gonzales, sister Rose Ybarra and a nephew.
The family will receive friends Sunday 4-7 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Prayers will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Richard Hudak, pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain, and the Rev. Gerald Keller will be co-celebrants. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township where the Disabled American Veterans of Lorain will conduct military honors.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Capital Campaign Fund at St. Peter Church or the donor's choice.
