ED Comer Obituary

Ed Comer ROCK HILL - Mr. Edward Blackmon Comer, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 19, 2014, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House. A memorial service will be 2pm on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Cornerstone United Methodist Church with Rev. Irvin Plowden officiating. Burial will be private. A lifelong resident of Rock Hill, Mr. Comer graduated from Rock Hill High School. He was a Navy veteran who proudly served in WWII and the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1952, he was immediately employed by the Rock Hill Fire Department, where he retired as Assistant Chief in 1981. Mr. Comer was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, which became Cornerstone United Methodist Church, for his entire life. He was a dedicated choir member and held many positions within the church. An avid golfer, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, landscaping and gardening. He was a former player, coach and umpire in the Rock Hill Slow Pitch Softball League. Mr. Comer's life was exemplified by love, kindness and service. He was a 50 year member of the Rock Hill Masonic Lodge #111. Mr. Comer was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Erselle Comer; four sisters; and three brothers. One brother, Ernest Comer of Union, SC, survives. Mr. Comer was married to Daisy Corley Comer until her death in 1986. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Carol Martin Comer; his daughters, Lynn Comer Fayard (Alan) of Seneca, SC and Lisa Comer May (Jimmy) of Penhook, VA; his granddaughter, Corley May Cole (Joshua) of Matthews, NC; his grandson, Daniel May of Vechta, Germany; and his great-grandson, Henry Cole of Matthews, NC. Also surviving are his stepsons, Steven Martin of the home and Walter "Butch" Martin (Rose) of Goldsboro, NC; his step-grandson, Chris Martin (Stacy) of Hickory, NC; his step-granddaughter, Sabrina Martin of Greenville, NC; his step-great-grandchildren, Bella Rose and Scarlett Martin, both of Hickory, NC. He dearly loved his many cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Memorials may be made in Mr. Comer's name to Hospice & Community Care, PO Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731; or to Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 2697 Heckle Blvd, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
