Jay SLOAN Obituary

SLOAN, Jay C.
Oct. 22, 1921 - April 21, 2015

Jay Sloan was a long-time leader in Georgetown, Texas, serving as Mayor, banker, and community supporter. Georgetown was his passion for more than 55 years. He was born October 22, 1921 in Rule, Texas to Ernest and Norelle Sloan, a West Texas ranching family. Attending school in Plains, Texas, Jay graduated salutatorian of his class in 1938. He served as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corps during WWII from 1942 to 1946. Receiving a BBA degree from The University of Texas in 1950, he was proud he had "orange blood".

Jay married Josephine Marguerite Falzon on December 22, 1946 in Franklin, Louisiana. She was the love of his life during their 65 years together. They had three children: Jon, Jan, and Joy.

Jay and Jo Sloan moved their young family to Georgetown in 1960 and spent the rest of their lives there. Throughout this time, Jay was a leader, instrumental in contributing to Georgetown's growth in population, employment, and quality of life. Highlights of his career include: Cofounder of Georgetown Savings and Loan Association in the early 1960's. Helped launch First Texas Bancorp, Inc., growing banks in Georgetown, Round Rock, Killeen, Lampasas, Belton, and Copperas Cove until his retirement in the late 1990's. Served in the Texas Bankers Association and was a Director for four years. Mayor of Georgetown from 1966 to 1972 and Chairman of the Economic Advisory Board. Initiated many notable civic institutions during his Mayoral tenure. President of the Georgetown Hospital Authority, which obtained financing and oversaw the construction of Georgetown Hospital. Member of the Board of Directors of Texas Crushed Stone Company for thirty years. Many local companies began and grew into successful enterprises through Jay's lending and business guidance.

Jay and Jo attended Grace Episcopal Church throughout their lives in Georgetown; he served as Chief Warden. Jay's great love for Georgetown was illustrated by his license plate "GEO TWN". The community recognized his contributions by honoring him as Most Worthy Citizen in 1970. Jay believed in the highest West Texas traditions of hard work, service, and relentless persistence.

Jay and Jo were immensely proud of their three children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandson. He is survived by his son, Jon E. Sloan (Becky) of Round Rock, daughter Joy Sloan Stryker (Wayne) of Aspen, Colorado; grandchildren, Dee Posey (Brian Clowers) of Pullman, Washington, Carly Will Sloan, Nan Norelle Sloan, Sloan Katheryn Stryker, and John Charles Stryker; and great-grandson Vaughn Kenneth Clowers. He was preceded in death by his wife Jo Sloan and daughter Jan Sloan Henry.

Please join the family in a memorial service to celebrate Jay Sloan's life on May 22, 2015, 2PM, Grace Episcopal Church, Georgetown. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to Grace Episcopal Church or the Greater Round Rock Community Foundation.
