Anna Maxine (Mac) Stembel, 93
Anna Maxine (Mac) Stembel, 93, of Fowler, died Friday, April 24, 2015 at St. Elizabeth East of Lafayette. She was born on March 17, 1922 in Templeton, Indiana to the late Samuel E. and Irene (Medley) Nichols.
Maxine graduated from Oxford High School and went on to attend Lafayette Business College. She married Kingston Laverne Stembel in Hugo, Oklahoma, in the 1940s. Hugo, Oklahoma is near Camp Maxey, Texas, where then-Lieutenant Kingston Stembel was stationed in the United States Army. He preceded her in death in 1991.
Maxine worked for the Benton Review Publishing Company for many years, worked as a bookkeeper for the Boswell Hardware Store, and ran the Fowler Bureau of Motor Vehicles for a time. She and her husband, Kingston, also owned and operated a local liquor store briefly. She belonged to the Benton County Country Club (BCCC) for most of her adult life, serving on the board and numerous committees over the years. She fondly remembered days of socializing with friends at "the Club." She was an avid golfer for many years and loved watching sports of all kinds. She especially enjoyed Purdue University basketball and was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan. She also was a life long card player.
She was a very open-minded woman, always seeming younger than her years. Her quick wit and wonderfully dry sense of humor will be long-remembered by those who knew her. She loved her family and friends dearly, but absolutely adored her only grandchild, Joe.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Kingston, her son, Kent, two brothers, William (Lolly) Nichols (wife, Ruth) and Harold Nichols (wife, Dode), and a nephew, Jimmy Medley (wife, Sally) of Crawfordsville. Surviving are her grandson, Joseph (Joe) Alden Stembel and daughter-in-law, Shari Stembel, both of Fowler, nephew, Bruce Nichols (wife, Kris), of Puyallup, Washington, and many wonderful friends, too numerous to count.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 29, 2015, from 5 to 8 pm. at Windler Funeral Home, Fowler, with one hour of visitation on Thursday, prior to the 11 am. Funeral at Windler Funeral Home.

Mrs. Stembel and her husband were certainly tolerant of the musical pursuits of their son, Kent. I remember when she worked in the license branch next door to the Swing Shop where she and King allowed a teenaged Kent to be the store manager. What a great way to encourage entrepreneurship while still being close at hand if needed. My deepest condolences to Joe and Shari.

Maxine was my second cousin. We grew up amongst the many Nichols cousins in Templeton during the depression. I am sorry to hear of her passing.
