Mrs. Julia Bess Williams Hand of Atlanta, GA, passed away at the William Breman Jewish Home on April 24, 2015. Julia, daughter of Nettie Rogers Williams & Charlie W. Williams, was born on August 2, 1936, in Monroe, Louisiana. She grew up making many lifelong friends and graduated from Neville High School in 1954. Julia earned a B.S. Degree from Louisiana State University in 1957 and spent the next five years in Dallas, Texas. In 1962 she was awarded a federal grant to study at Emory University and graduated in 1963 with a M. Ed Degree in education of the hearing impaired, audiology and speech pathology, which qualified her for employment at the Atlanta Speech School. She worked at the Speech School for over thirty years, the last twenty three as Executive Director. She was a passionate about the growth and well-being of the Speech School. After retiring from the Speech School, Julia volunteered in the church office at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church for several years and served on the Board of Directors of St. Anne’s Terrace.
Julia was preceded in death by her parents Nettie and Charles W. Williams, and her brother, Charles W. Williams, Jr. She leaves behind a husband of over 40 years, Herbert Hand; Herb’s two children Sarah Pope (Christopher) and William Pearson Hand; two adored grandchildren, a beloved sister Nettie Jean Hewett of Memphis and a cousin Guy Cook (Beth) of New Orleans.
A memorial service will be held Sunday May 3, 2015 at 3 o’clock at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church with a reception following in the Parish Hall. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, 3098 St. Anne’s Lane, NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30327.
