Peter Trucano Obituary

Peter J. Trucano

Born: May 26, 1918

Died: May 10, 2015

Peter J. "Pete" Trucano died at the Oak Trace Retirement Community in Downers Grove, Illinois on May 10th, a couple weeks short of his 97th birthday.

Born May 26, 1918, in Bevier, Missouri, Pete grew up in Highwood, Illinois. After caddying at Exmoor Country Club on Chicago's North Shore, he attended Northwestern University on an Evans Caddie Scholarship.

Following a three-year stint in the Navy during World War II where he worked on a program tasked with developing radar for aircraft, he earned a PhD in organic chemistry at the Institute of Paper Chemistry. He moved to Morris in 1947 to establish a quality control lab at the Morris Paper Mill and subsequently worked in sales for the paper mill until the early 1970s. He then became President of a packaging company in Geneva, Illinois, which he ran until his retirement in 1987.

A life-long golfer, Pete was a member of the Morris Country Club for 68 years and was Club Champion 13 times. During his tenure as President of the Club, he designed and oversaw the construction of the Club's second nine. He remained an active golfer until last year, shooting his age many times over the years.

Pete was preceded in death by Fern, his wife of 64 years; his brother, Armand of Culver City, CA; and his parents, Batista and Olivia Trucano.

He is survived by his children, Peter (Louise) of Downers Grove, Mike (Doreen) of North Oaks, MN, John (Maria Henly) of Minneapolis, MN, Anne (Charles) Sincerbeaux of Weston, MA; daughter-in-law, Judy of Orono, MN; 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Pete's life will be celebrated at a memorial service that will be held at the Morris Country Club at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 30th.

Memorial gifts can be directed to the Evans Scholarship Foundation.

Arrangements have been entrusted with U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, 301 W Washington Street, Morris, Illinois.

Sounds like Pete had a full life!

Some 6-7 years back, Pete was taking his annual autumn flight to Florida via Midway. He started conversation with a young lady seated next to him and compared hometowns. She was from NW Indiana. When he mentioned 'Morris', my sister replied that her brother lived in Morris. Pete asked about which area, to which she replied, "Barrington Road." Pete then stated: "I live on Barrington Road!" They chatted the rest of their flight to Orlando. Since then, my sister would often inquire about the "elderly gentleman on our street" and asked how he was doing. Pete often mentioned that same airline story when he stopped his car on the road to comment on my yard work. We both miss Pete's humor and spark for life. When Carol asked about his secret to a long life, Pete grinned, shrugged, and exclaimed: "I guess just being ornery!"

I have enjoyed many times listening to the great stories Pete had to tell. He will be greatly missed. What a great man. Diane Zuelke
