Peter Anthony "Esso" Esposito was born May 19, 1926 in Shenandoah, and died April 11 in San Diego, Calif., from complications resulting from cancer.
Esso was a son of Filipo and Rose Esposito. He is survived by a sister, Agnes Ferguson, Shenandoah; a brother, Philip, Baltimore. He leaves behind his wife, Silvia; three children, Laura Pribyl (Matthew), Bobbee Britton (Mark) and Michael; four grandchildren, Erik, Ian and Lexi Holland, and Megan Laney; a great-grandchild; four nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Shenandoah, Peter entered the Navy in 1944 and served aboard ship for two years doing duty in the Pacific. Upon leaving the service, he attended and graduated from Penn State University with a degree in journalism in 1951.
Peter married Silvia in 1952 and after working in advertising in Manhattan, relocated to upstate New York. He began working in public relations at the Corning Glass Works, but soon decided his calling was with the newspapers.
Peter began writing articles for the local papers and became the Steuben County Bureau lead reporter for multiple newspapers in that area of the state (Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, Elmira Start Gazette). He covered a wide range of news, events and human interest stories. His article, "Lindbergh's Flight Recalls Earlier Atlantic Crossing" written in May 1977, is permanently housed in the National Library of Congress.
Peter retired from the newspaper business in 1978 and worked for the Steuben County Sheriff's Department until 1990 when he retired for good and joined his family in San Diego where he enjoyed gloating about the weather, oranges from his own tree, Balboa Park, local aviation activities, and travelling to Europe. He was a happy, curious, cautious, and loved husband; father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a lover of airplanes and animals. A voracious reader of nonfiction and amateur 'expert' on many subjects, he could - and would - hold forth at length on any given topic. He was a lover of cheese, all-day breakfast and never met a baked good he didn't like. He was the last fan of teaberry ice cream. We will miss him.
