John Arthur Ball, Jr. WEDDINGTON - John Arthur Ball, Jr., of Weddington, died peacefully on June 26, 2015, in Waxhaw, NC. He was born June 8, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Esther and John A. Ball, Sr., and brother of Geraldine. He graduated from Loyola University in the class of 1950. He then joined the United States Navy during the Korean War, serving honorably until 1954 and was released from inactive duty in 1967 ending with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In 1955 he joined US Plywood Corporation as a Sales Trainee, rising to the position of President in 1968. Following US Plywood's merger with Champion International, John served as Executive Vice President of the merged company until his retirement in 1996. During this time he was active in local community and national industry affairs serving as Chairman of the American Plywood Association and the American Forest Institute. In the Stamford, Connecticut community, Champion's home base, he served on the Boards of The United Way, The Stamford Center for the Arts, The Child Guidance Center, The Ferguson Library, The Fairfield County Foundation, Norwalk Community College, Norwalk Hospital and in 1994 was named Stamford Citizen of the Year. He and his family were long time residents of Darien, Connecticut. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marie to whom he was married to for almost 62 years; his four children, John III and his wife Carrie, Jamie and her husband Brad, James and his wife Lorie and Jodi and her husband Steve; his eight grandchildren, Michael, Sean, Lily, Henry, Alex, John IV, Matthew and Courtney, his great-grandson, Dylan, his brother-in-law Edward Phillips, eight nephews, seven nieces and his lifelong best friend Charles Clough. Private visitation will be on Friday, July 3, 2015, from 11:00 AM until 12:00PM with prayer services beginning at 12:00 PM in the Weddington Chapel of Heritage Funeral Home, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive. Graveside service with military honors will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in the Family Estate Garden. In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215. www.alz.org/northcarolina. So sorry to hear about John's passing. He was a force of nature! He did so much for Champion and the Stamford communinity. I remember well the conversations, the pointed direction, and the humor while I worked as part of the Champions for Life team.

What a great man. He had such a presence when he entered a room. Seemed like he could always light up an audience with his wit and a funny story. It saddens me to learn of this great Champion's passing. Prayers to the family.
