Joan M. Kelly, 78, of Daytona Beach, Fla., passed away July 31, 2015. Joan was born in Jessup, Pa., and attended Marywood College in Scranton, Pa. She graduated from St. Joseph's Hospital, School of Nursing in Carbondale, Pa. She had affiliations with Seton Institute in Reistertown, Maryland, Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C., and the Tuberculosis Unit Hamburg Hospital, Hamburg, Pa. As a registered nurse, Joan began her career at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton. She then became a shift supervisor at St. Joseph's Hospital. After marrying Larry Kelly and moving to Johnson City, N.Y., she became an ICU nurse at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. Joan and Larry moved to Daytona Beach for Larry to work at General Electric. Joan was raising Larry Jr., with Ann on her way, and Pat soon to follow… "Irish Twins." After their fourth child, Chris, was born, Joan returned to nursing as an office nurse for Dr. David Simes and on weekends at Halifax Medical Center as an emergency room nurse. She then went back to work full-time with Health Care of Volusia County as an admission nurse. One more son, Mathew, was added to the mix, as Joan continued to work her full-time job and to have an active role with St. Paul's Parent Association. She became president of St. Paul's Parent Association and president of Booster Club at Father Lopez High School. As an involved parent of five, she managed to feed many of the football players. You could always count on the Kelly house for a good meal with Joan's cooking! Joan then moved her nursing career to Humana Hospital as director of social services and discharge planning. At Humana she was promoted to develop and implement a pilot program for Senior Friends that grew to 8,000 members. She had the opportunity to participate in Hillary Clinton's Conference on Aging in Washington, D.C., and was appointed to the North East Area Florida Council on Aging board of directors. After Humana Senior Friends, Joan was then hired as a consultant at Halifax Medical Center for program development and implementation of Passport Club. In 2000, she was the first woman president of the Oceanside Rotary Club. She served as a delegate to the National Convention of Rotary in Buenos Aires. Joan was chairwoman of the board for Good Samaritan. She has volunteered for Florida Association Directors of Volunteer Services Inc., Extended Family Inc./Adult Day Center, Our Lady of Hope Church-Ministry of Mothers and Eucharistic minister. She was on the board of Stewart Marchman/ACT, Warm Center and had taken an active role in planning the annual Christmas parties for children of mothers that are in drug rehabilitation. She was a member of GE Wives Club.
Joan's true passion was her family. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Larry Kelly. Of all of her accomplishments, Joan was most proud of her five children and 11 grandchildren. Her children are Larry Kelly Jr. (Dara), Ann Michele Saour (Paul), Patrick Joseph Kelly (Kathy), Christopher Kelly and Mathew Kelly (Angela). And her grandchildren whom she loved greatly are Erin Fabrizio, LJ Kelly, Paul Kelly, Nick Fabrizio, Kaitlyn Kelly, Anna Kelly, Josh Kelly, Brendan Kelly, Hayden Kelly, Ryan Kelly and Noelle Kelly. And added to that was her love for her seven granddogs.
A visitation in her honor will be held Monday, Aug. 3, 2015, at Lohman Funeral Home Daytona, 1423 Bellevue Ave., Daytona Beach, Fla., from 4 to 7 p.m., with Wake Service at 7.
