Saunders, Richard W.
Richard Walter Saunders, 91, of Stamford passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 3, 1923 in New York City to the late M. Henry and Mary McAlpin Saunders.
Richard was known as Dick to all who knew him well. He focused on family and friends during his retirement. Dick loved to travel, read, and play bridge. He spent 27 years with Arthur Anderson & Co, ending his career as the senior Tax Partner in the Stamford office. His colleagues admired him for his technical and professional acumen, as well as his relaxed approach and great sense of humor. Prior to AA & Co, Dick served in the Army, worked in the intelligence division of the US Treasury, and worked for several small accounting firms. He was a graduate of New York University School of Commerce, Business, & Finance and Brooklyn Law School.
Dick was severely wounded while serving in WWII. He spent 10 months in a military hospital before being honorably discharged in December of 1945. He was deeply proud of his service, and remained a life-long member of the 102nd Infantry Division Association and Disabled American Veterans.
Richard is survived by his devoted wife Maureen Saunders of Stamford, his loving children, Buddy Saunders of AZ, Kenneth Saunders of FL, Bill Saunders and his wife Trang of Stamford, Maureen Saunders of FL and James Saunders of Stamford, as well as eight grandchildren, Kim, Ben, Joe, Dan, Maya, Kim, Billy, Mary and three great grandchildren, Alex, Jordan and Auburn.
Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Saturday, September 5, 2015 from 1:00-3:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at 10:30 AM at The Basilica of St. John the Evangelist RC Church, 279 Atlantic Street, Stamford. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Richard's memory to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675, www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Building, Memphis, TN 38105.

Dick was my uncle and will always remember him as a strong man with a great sense of humor. My favorite uncle. I was not aware of his military service. I am more proud to have known him now than ever. God bless, rest in peace. I loved the way he told a joke.

I never had the honor of knowing Mr. Saunders myself, but I do know his daughter Maureen. It is a great testament to a parent how their children "turn out", she exemplifies this! Maureen my Irish Sister I wish you and your family nothing but peace and comfort during this trying time. I pray that you don't comfort in knowing that he is in heaven with God looking down upon all of.you smiling. I you !

Many of our "Greatest Generation" who came home were wounded either physically or emotionally. This man was proud of his service to our nation. Wow, kinda makes you proud to be an American! Thank you for your service to our country,now rest with your brothers in arms.
