SALVATORE RUSSO Obituary

Salvatore Michael Russo One of the 'Greatest Generation': Jan. 13, 1923-Sept. 1, 2015 On Sept. 1, 2015, Salvatore Russo passed from this life at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a long, courageous battle. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church in Hoboken, N.J., with entombment immediately following at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington, N.J. There will be no viewing. Arrangements are entrusted to Failla Memorial Home, 533 Willow Ave., Hoboken, N.J. 07030, www.faillamemorialhome.com (201) 659-0082. Salvatore Russo was a life-long resident of Hoboken, born to Michael Russo and Carolina Montesano Russo. Not long after graduating from Demarest High School, he was drafted into military service (December 1943) and served as a staff sergeant in the 3rd Armored "Spearhead" Division under General Patton. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and in the Normandy invasion, among other fronts, for which he received a Bronze Star for heroism, two Silver Service Stars, a Purple Heart, and various other medals for valor. Upon his honorable discharge, Sal attended Seton Hall University and received a graduate degree in business from New York University, working his way up to vice president at Royal Globe Insurance Company, where he worked for over 30 years. He was proud of his Italian ancestry and was a devout Roman Catholic and a loyal fan of the New York Yankees. Sal was a loving and devoted husband and father whose greatest joy was spending time together with his family, both at the Jersey Shore and on vacations around the world. He was loyal and caring with a keen sense of humor and enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends and good times spent together. He was the rock upon which our family was built. His absence will be sorely felt. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pauline; his daughters, Linda, her husband, Dr. Joseph Lombardi, and Janet, her husband, Dr. Ken Cubelli, and his eight grandchildren, Dr. Adriana Lombardi, her husband, Donald Stanzione, Marc, Dr. Joseph Lombardi, Christina, Peter, Paul, Stefani, and Michael. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ECLC Foundation, Pride Endowment, 100 Passaic Ave., Suite 1, Chatham, N.J. 07928. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
