ILER, William M. Of Beverly, MA, died peacefully at home in the company of his family on August 23, 2015. Born in New York City, Nov. 13, 1926, he attended St. Paul's School, and Princeton University, where he was a member of Cottage Club, participated in ROTC, and rowed. He served in the Army in the Korean War. He stayed on in South Korea after the war in order to complete building a primary school for the local province. He was later honorably discharged as a Captain. After Korea, he followed his maternal forbears, the Bordens of Fall River Iron Works, working in the textile industry in New York and then Boston, until the time of his death. He was a member of the Union Boat Club of Boston, where he served many years on the executive committee and participated in the 1959 crew that raced at Henley, U.K. A farmer at heart, there was nothing in this world that Bill Iler loved more than being with his family. He spent every waking hour of his life trying to provide for them. Known for his wry wit and for always lending a hand to those in need, he was selfless and self-deprecating to the end. A quintessential Yankee, he reveled in his thrift and ability to make due with less. He leaves his wife Deedie (Devens), devoted daughter Edith (Wiedemann), sons Matthew, Samuel and Alexander, 6 grandchildren, brother Alex (Joan), 8 nieces and nephews, and 13 godchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 705 Hale St., Beverly Farms, MA at 11 am on Wednesday, October 14, 2015. In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to Princeton University, Princeton, NJ or to the Fall River Historical Society, in memory of Bill Iler, at Fall River Historical Society, 451 Rock St., Fall River, MA 02720.
