i was in seminary with john for ten years. he was the first among us to reach 200 lbs' but he wore it well, and undoubtedly contributed to his bellowing voice and laugh being heard a football length away. john allowed none of us to take ourselves too seriously, but his jabs were friendly and, i hasten to say, loving. he'd blush to hear it, but he was a sweet guy.

My condolences to John's Family. John and I worked together at the U.S. Attorney's Office during the period 1981-1987 coordinating the activities of the Civil and Criminal Divisions. After 25 plus years, I still remember John's smile and his thoughtfulness.
