Spitz, Ellen Ellie Weis 1926 - 2016 Ellen Weis Spitz (Ellie) lost her battle with Alzheimer's Disease on February 2, 2016. In true Ellen fashion, she fought with all of her strength right up to the end. Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1926, Ellen grew up in Concordia, MO. It was there she met her future husband, Richard Spitz Dick. She graduated with High Distinction from Valparaiso University in 1947 with a chemistry degree. She married Dick on December 26, 1948 and worked at Mallinckrodt as a research chemist while he served in the army and attended medical school. They had three children, Mary Ellen, Joy and Nancy. The family relocated several times for Dick's career, returning to St. Louis in 1966. Ellen taught chemistry at Mary Institute until 1975 when she rejoined Mallinckrodt. During this time she also earned two Master's Degrees, in chemistry (Notre Dame University) and business administration (St. Louis University). Ellen's career flourished at Mallinckrodt over the span of 25+ years and she retired as Director of Regulatory Affairs. Ellen cherished being with her family, traveling with friends and enjoying her music. She was a lady of deep faith; this faith and a strong spirit helped her through some difficult times in her life. In 2004, Ellen moved to Houston, TX. While she did not want to leave St. Louis, she wanted to be near her loved ones as her health declined. Ellen is preceded in death by her parents Emil and Clara Weis, brother Earl and daughter Mary Ellen. She is survived by daughters Joy Lee (Tommy) and Nancy Hurley (Tom), sister Carol Stohs (Milton), sister-inlaw Lois Weis and grandchildren Geoffrey Copper (Stephanie Tritchler), Matthew Hurley (Michelle), Dan Hurley, Charlie Hurley, Dillon Hurley and John Hurley, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Joy and Nancy would like to express special gratitude to the nurses and staff at the Buckingham in Houston for ten years of sincere, gracious care of our dear mother. In accordance with her wishes, her body was donated to the University of Texas Willed Body Program for medical research. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances to the St. Louis Symphony, the St. Louis Zoo, MICDS or the charity of one's choice.
