Chief Master Sergeant Charles W. Johnson, 91, of Colbert, GA, died Thursday, February 11, 2016 at his residence after a long illness.
He was born in Brady (McCulloch County), TX on April 11, 1924 to Joseph Taylor and Stella Holley Johnson. Mr. Joseph Johnson was from Vernon, AL and Mrs. Stella Johnson was from Columbus, MS. Charles attended Brookesmith High School, Brookesmith, TX, where he met Ethel Joyce Mathews. They were high school sweethearts and graduated in 1941, then married in 1942. The following year he joined the United States Army Air Corps and served until his retirement in 1971.
He served in WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Bronze Star. During WWII, he completed 33 bombing missions in B17's as top turret gunner. He received numerous other medals during his time in service for our country. He achieved the rating of Chief Master Sergeant.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe T. Johnson of Mason, TX; two brothers, Lewis Johnson of Washington State and Raymond T. Johnson of Grand Prairie, TX; two sisters, Ila Mae Duncan of Mason, TX and Marie Barker of Brady, TX; and one nephew, James R. Duncan of San Antonio, TX.
Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Ethel Joyce Johnson of Colbert, GA; a son, Charles Gary Johnson (Ina) of Ellijay, GA; a daughter, Karen R. Wilkes of Colbert, GA; four grandchildren, Matt Johnson of Denver, CO, Jennifer Fowler (Dana) of Powder Springs, GA, Lorey Phillips (Alden) of Colbert, GA and Clint Wilkes of Colbert, GA; six great-grandchildren, Truman and Kalena Johnson, Mylie Madden, Dane Fowler, Kayla Phillips and Drayton Wilkes; two nephews, J.B. Johnson (Barbara) of Arlington, VA and David Barker of Brady, TX; a niece, Lynda Gail Hendley of Brady, TX.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 17 at 2 p.m. at Bernstein Funeral Home in Athens, GA. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 16 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to heart or cancer research.
