Ivan J. Smith, 86, of Pompano Beach, FL passed away peacefully on Wed. August 24, 2016. Born in Corbin, KY Ivan and his family moved to Ft. Lauderdale in 1936. He graduated from Ft. Lauderdale High in 1948. While attending Univ. of FL pursuing a law degree, his father in the farming and cattle business in Broward County, broke his leg so Ivan left school in 1951 to assist his Dad. He then enlisted in the Coast Guard. In 1954 he entered the real estate business with M.N. Weir & Sons of Pompano Beach. In 1965 he became President of their Pompano office. In January 1969 he started Ivan J. Smith & Co., Inc. REALTORS on the corner of Atlantic Blvd. and A1A where his daughter, Stephanie Bates, is now President. Ivan was Pres. of the Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach Board of REALTORS in 1967 and was awarded Outstanding REALTOR of the Year. He served as Director of the FL Assn. of REALTORS and attained "REALTOR Emeritus" status with the Nat'l. Assn. Ivan participated in many civic activities. In 1964 he was named one of the five outstanding men of Pompano Beach by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He served on several bank Board of Directors and at the age of 48 was elected Chairman of First Nat'l. Bank of Broward County. Many of Ivan's successes include his real estate developments, among them Deerfield's Cove Subdivision, Venetian Isles Yacht Club (now Lighthouse Point Yacht Club), Fieldbrook in Boca Raton and The Criterion Condominium in Pompano. He owned the one-block property known as Rayvan at Atlantic Blvd. and A1A in Pompano Beach till 2008. He loved spending time with his family and his summer home in Lake Toxaway, NC and adored his Beagles. Ivan is predeceased by his brother Joe. Surviving is his beloved wife of 65 years Gene, 3 daughters Stephanie (Randy) Bates, Kelly Murray, Cary (Charles) Garlinghouse, 5 grandchildren Brian (Rebecca) Gill, Aaron (Katie) Gill, Lauren North, Dana and Trevor Garlinghouse, and 3 great-grandchildren Kyle, Paige and Jake Gill. A Memorial Service will be held Sept. 1, 2016 at 2:00 at Kraeer's, 200 N. Federal Hwy, Pompano Beach. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Humane Society of Broward County, 2070 Griffin Rd., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312
