Mary Ellen Gilbert Thomas - SAVANNAH - Mary Ellen Gilbert Thomas, 81, of Savannah, GA, retired employee of the Federal Government (U.S. Army JAG at the Pentagon, Polar Sciences Division of the U.S. Army and the Social Security Administration), died February 22, 2017, at home of complications from Alzheimer's disease. She was born on March 20, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late Gerald M. Gilbert and Gladys Irene Huffman Gilbert. Mrs. Thomas is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, William E. Thomas, Jr.; two sons, Kevin William Thomas (Chris) of Raleigh, NC and Timothy Evan Thomas (Kathy) of Alpharetta, GA; and a grandson, Evan Gardner Thomas and a granddaughter, Maggie Olivia Thomas, and her sister, Carolyn Louise Gilbert Weidner of Arden, NC. She was a graduate of Michigan State University and after her retirement from the US Government was active in her husband's business while they resided in Kinston, NC for over 36 years. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, February 25, 2017 in the Islands Chapel of Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors. The Family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service. The family would like to express the deepest thanks to Spanish Oaks Hospice of Savannah and particularly to Colby Aimar, RN and Diane Hall, CNA for their loving and tender care during her last days. Dear Thomas Family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. When we lose a loved one, they become a memory. Then the memory becomes a treasure. Hold on to those treasures of your loved one Mary, the will bring you comfort when you need it most during those difficult times. 1 Thessalonians 4:14 says "For if we have faith that Jesus died and rose again, so to God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in death through Jesus Christ.
