Margaret Elahi Roy
Monroe - Funeral services for Margaret Elahi Roy will be at 2:00 PM, Friday, January 19, 2018 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe with Reverend Lynn Malone officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial.
Mrs. Margaret Elahi Roy, a devoted wife, loved her family, gardening, knitting, and loved teaching her students. She was born on October 13, 1935 and passed away on January 15, 2018. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Benjamin Roy.
Margaret was born in Sialkot, Pakistan into a family of seven siblings. She graduated from Kinnaird College in Lahore, Pakistan receiving a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics. Margaret was a pioneer in her conservative family, being the only member in her family who received a college degree. She married in 1966 to John Benjamin Roy. She taught school at Lucie Harrison High School for girls after graduation. She eventually got the post of Head Mistress at the high school and served faithfully for seventeen years.
On July 3, 1979, Margaret Roy moved to America along with her husband and three children. In America, she taught high school math at Carroll High School in Monroe, Louisiana for twenty one years. She was liked by students because of her devotion to teaching. Margaret worked hard in her new found home in America. She was a mother, home maker, and school teacher. She had a strong work ethic for often times she worked two jobs. She would even teach summer school every year to earn extra for her family. Margaret used to tell her children that as long as she had blood running through her veins she would work. Margaret lived her life at her own terms despite being from a very conservative society. She was head-strong, independent in thought, and uncompromising in her beliefs. Margaret's defining traits were kindness and generosity. She never shied away from giving even when she did not have much to give. Margaret never met a person she did not like because she always looked at the positive side of an individual. She instilled these values in her children, especially hard work and generosity. She leaves a legacy of successful children and a plethora of students who remember her with fondness as their beloved math teacher.
She is survived by her children, Saqib Roy and his wife, Humaira Roy, Sadaf Ruth Shaw and her husband, Waseem Shaw, and Samer Roy, MD and his wife, Uzma Roy. Her grandchildren include Sarah Roy, Rebecca Roy, Jonathan Roy, Zachary Shaw, Jadon Roy, Samantha Roy, Joshua Roy, Luke Shaw, Jason Roy, and Sienna Roy. Her surviving siblings include, Marcella Mall and Marcus Elahi. She is also survived by sister-in-laws, Venus Elahi, Parveen Roy, and Violet Roy; brother-in-laws, James Roy, Jacob Roy, and Justin Roy.
Pallbearers will be Saqib Roy, Samer Roy, Waseem Shaw, Jacob Roy, Ahsan Henry, Solomon Douglas, and Roger Elahi.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe.

I will never forget her kindness toward me and my family nor will I forget the delicious lunches we used to share when she carried me home with her for lunch. I thought she was a great cook. It was always hot and spicy. I miss her and I loved her dearly.
We had a lot of fun together while working at Carroll High under Principal Julian Gray.

Mrs. Roy was my friend always. We shared many cherished moments in her home, in my home, and on the job at Carroll High School. We truly loved her for the beautiful and loving friend, mother, wife, teacher, and individual she was. I share your tremendous loss.
Always remember how proud she was of her children and grandchildren. She was happy to share vacations with the whole family. She was a joy to know.
