Chester P. Bednarek, 81, of Eynon, died Saturday morning at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, Wilkes-Barre. He is survived by his wife, the former Jean Virbitsky. They had been married 59 years.
Born in Dickson City, he was the son of the late Frank and Stella Safinowski Bednarek and was a member of St. Mary's Visitation Church, Dickson City. He was a graduate of Dickson City High School, and he served with the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a former member of VFW Post 5937 and the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 11, both of Dickson City. Chester had been employed as an auto mechanic at Frank's Garage, Dickson City, and before retirement he was employed as a guard at Farview State Hospital.
He dealt with military memorabilia, and along with his wife owned and operated an antique business for many years, traveling throughout the country. For the past 16 years they sold items at Sugerman's in Eynon.
Surviving are a son, John Bednarek, Eynon; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Stanley Bednarek; and two sisters, Mary Matechak and Sophie Gajzik.
Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Frank T. Mazur Funeral Home Inc., 601 Dundaff St., Dickson City. The funeral and interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
