Rexanne Davis Metzger
Norfolk - Rexanne Davis Metzger, 63, entered the Magic Kingdom of Heaven on May 29, 2018 after a brave and hard fought battle with Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). She was born in Norfolk to the late Rex P. and Mary D. Davis.
Left to celebrate her memory are her daughter Whitney Weireter and husband Brian with their daughter Katherine; her daughter Hillary Dunigan and husband Ryan with their daughter Olivia; her brother William G. Davis and wife Bea; numerous and dear cousins; and countless friends.
Rexanne graduated from Lake Taylor High School in 1972 and Virginia Commonwealth University in 1976 with a BFA in Interior Design. She was the second generation owner of Davis Interiors, Ltd. in Norfolk, founded by her parents in 1955 to provide shipboard habitability services to the U.S. Navy. She was immensely proud of the work the company did.
She was a tirelessly active member of her community. Rexanne served on the Board of Directors for Lee's Friends, the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, d'Art Center, Norfolk Collegiate School, and Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach. She was a longtime member of the Garden Club of Norfolk, West Ghent Circle, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, and numerous book clubs. Rexanne served on the vestry of her beloved Church of the Good Shepherd and was an LEM minister and former Sunday school teacher. The Hampton Roads community is a little brighter and better for her lifelong devotion to civic involvement.
Rexanne was an advocate for breast cancer patients and their families. At age 34 she was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic breast cancer and underwent a revolutionary autologous bone marrow transplant at Duke University that gave her another 29 years to celebrate life and live each day to the fullest. She gave Virginian women hope after helping to successfully lobby the Virginia General Assembly in 1994 to require insurance providers cover bone marrow transplants and other breast cancer treatments.
She was passionate about exploring the world, visiting 73 countries, 6 continents, and 49 states. There was hardly a place on Earth that Rexanne didn't want to visit. Her heart was always fullest on countless trips to Manhattan and Disney World.
Rexanne was a fearless leader, an exceptional hostess, adventurer, devoted mother and grandmother, dear friend, and figure of inspiration and bravery. She will be deeply missed. And with that, Elvis has left the building.
The family will receive friends at a visitation from 5 until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 4th at the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. in Norfolk. A celebration of Rexanne's life will be held on Tuesday, June 5th at 2:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Norfolk. A reception will be immediately following. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Rexanne's memory to Lee's Friends, the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, or to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Rexanne was a friend to all at Lake Taylor High School, and I'm not surprised she was loved by many throughout her life. How good to know she stayed the positive and active person I remember her being during the time I knew her. I am sorry for her family's loss but will remember her with a smile.
