JAMES MOORE Obituary

MOORE
JAMES HARRISON MOORE passed away suddenly and peacefully on Saturday, the 1st of January 2011, after suffering a stroke. He was born in Houston, Texas on the 20th of December 1941, the son of Preston Moore and Ruth Baker Moore, by whom he is predeceased. He was the maternal grandson of Captain James Addison Baker and Alice Graham Baker, and the paternal grandson of Harrison Robert Moore and Carrie Black Moore.
Jim attended The Kinkaid School in Houston and graduated from The Judson School in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he developed into an outstanding tennis player who was captain of Judson's team. He attended The University of Texas and became a lifelong supporter of its football program. Jim returned to Houston to work in the family business at Wilson Stationary and Printing Company. By the time he was 29, Jim had met, courted and married the love of his life, Lynda McConnell, who was then working in an accounting firm that Wilson Stationary and Printing used. Years later, Jim left the family business to embark on a career in investments. During his lifetime, Jim had been a member of The Longhorn Foundation, The Chancellor's Council at The University of Texas, Allegro, the Houston Country Club, and Second Baptist Church.
Jim was a kind and loving man who enjoyed life to the fullest. Friends and family members recall that he always seemed to be laughing, hugging them and grinning his big infectious smile. A devoted family man, he spent much of his time coaching his children's athletic teams. When the children got big enough, the family began spending two weeks each summer riding horses in Granby, Colorado, not far from Rocky Mountain National Park. Jim loved horses and over the years, he, Lynda and the children became accomplished riders. His other passion was sports, and particularly Texas Longhorn football. Although his Longhorns suffered a tough season this fall, he told people that he remained "confident that things would get better." And, of course, there was Lynda, his beloved wife with whom he journeyed through life. Additionally Jim found much comfort, peace and guidance with his walk with the Lord through his church.
Jim is survived by his wife Lynda McConnell Moore; daughter Mary Ruth Baker Moore Meek and her husband, Samuel Walker Meek IV; son Wilson Baker Moore; his grandchildren Kaylee Baker Meek, Zachary Samuel James Meek and Haley Rain Meek; brother Preston Moore, Jr. and his wife, Betty Kyle; sister-in-law Joan McConnell Black and her husband, David Barrow Black; first cousins Mrs. Leon M. Payne, E. Clifton Wilson, Jr., former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, Bonner Means Baker, Stewart A. Baker and Malcolm G. Baker, Jr.; numerous nieces and nephews, and other beloved cousins, especially Meador Wigington, who has been like a sister.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Thursday, the 6th of January, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A memorial service is to be conducted at one o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 7th of January, in The Hankamer Chapel of Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Drive in Houston, where Reverends Brad Goad and Richmond Talbert are to officiate.
Serving as honorary casket bearers are Edward Baird, David M. Beveridge, Robert Hunt, M.D., Stephen M. Reckling, David Hill Smith, and E. Clifton Wilson, Jr.
Immediately following the service, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the Deacons' Parlor.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment service at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in James' name be directed to Neighborhood Centers Inc., c/o VP of Development, P.O. Box 271389, Houston, TX, 77277-1389; Second Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 6400 Woodway Dr., Houston, TX, 77057; or to the charity of one's choice.

LYNDA, ITS BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE FREDA WORKED FOR PRESTON AT WILSONS STATIONERY. THIS IS HOW I BECAME FRIENDS WITH JIMMY. HE USED TO GO TO LOUISIANA AND FISH WITH MY FATHER IN LAW. THE OLD SHOW, "GUNSMOKE" HAD A CHARTER NAMED "FESTUS" WHO HAD AN UGLY MUSTACH. AND JIMMY TRIED TO GROW ONE....I STARTED CALLING HIM "FESTUS" AND IT STUCK BECAUSE WHEN HE CALLED ME AT HOME HE WOULD SAY. "IT FESTUS". THAT WAS FOURTY YEARS AGO AND I STILL THINK OF JIMMY AND WILL MISS HIM. MAY MY FRIEND REST IN PEACE.. WAYNE M JONES [email protected]
