Sloan Preston Chambers
On Monday, September 26, 2011 at 3:39 pm Sloan Preston Chambers stopped dying and began living. Sloan is the beloved daughter and only child of Dr. Carroll Labron Chambers, Jr. and Katherine Brownlee Chambers.
Sloan was born on Tuesday, March 25, 1997 in Little Rock, Arkansas. As an infant she was baptized at University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill, NC, her mother's home church and the church where her parents were married. At the age of 15 months, the family moved to Roanoke, Virginia. From Junior Kindergarten through fourth grade Sloan attended North Cross School in Roanoke. For a brief time, Sloan and her parents lived in Charleston, South Carolina on Daniel Island while her father was on staff at the Medical University of South Carolina.
In June of 2008 the Chambers family moved to Charlotte. For 6th through 8th grades Sloan attended Alexander Graham Middle School. For high school Sloan was accepted to Charlotte Latin School. Sloan was so excited to begin high school, but that opportunity was not to be.
In February 2011 Sloan was confirmed at Myers Park Presbyterian Church the day before she was diagnosed with Mast Cell Leukemia. "The rarest of the rare" cancers, as one physician put it. Never before in medical literature has a child been diagnosed with this illness. Though Sloan received excellent care at Levine Children's Hospital, this virulent disease ran rampant through her body. She was close to remission in July when she received a bone marrow transplant with her mother as her donor. The transplant was an apparent success until her symptoms returned early in September and it was discovered she had relapsed.
From the '"get go' Sloan was happy, friendly, bright, creative and a real ball of energy. Her favorite sports were field hockey and lacrosse. She played both of these sports at Alexander Graham Middle School.
Litchfield Beach and Due West, South Carolina, where the Brownlee family has homes, were Sloan's two favorite places in this world. She was a "fish" in the ocean and enjoyed it most of all when the waves were rough. That was HER kind of challenge.
Sloan was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Carroll Labron Chambers, Sr. and survived by, in addition to her parents, her two Papillons, Rufus and Mabel. Other surviving family members are her paternal grandmother, Eleanor Rachels Chambers, maternal grandparents, Dr. Robert Calvin Brownlee, III and Judith Irby Brownlee; uncles and aunts, Stuart Alva Chambers and wife, Amy Jones Chambers, Rala Suzanne Chambers, Dr. Jonathan Irby Calvin Brownlee and wife, Molly Powell Brownlee, and Dr. Robert Calvin Brownlee, IV; cousins Ian, Aaron, Adam and Chloe Chambers and Jack, Janie, and Charlie Brownlee and many other loving family members.
Her family wishes to express their gratitude to the oncology staff and transplant team at Levine Children's Hospital, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Levine, and Kids Path Hospice. In lieu of flowers Sloan's parents would appreciate any donation to the "Sloan Chambers Fund" through Carolinas Healthcare Foundation with all proceeds going to the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Levine Children's Hospital. The address is as follows: Carolinas Healthcare Foundation, Attn: Sheri Joseph, 1221 East Morehead Street, Charlotte, NC 28204. In the memo please write 'Sloan Chambers Fund'.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Providence Hall at the church. Interment at the Myers Park Presbyterian Columbarium will be private.

To Ms Ellie, Labron and Kate,... I am so sorry for your loss, my heart literally hurts for you, Sloan's other family members and her countless friends...what a beautiful child. I pray for Jesus to wrap you in His loving arms, and fill your hearts and souls with His Peace and His Love. I don't know why innocent children have to get cancer; hopefully one day in the future, there will be a CURE. Love and Light to you.

Dear Chambers family,
I have just read your daughter's story online and i'm so sorry for your loss. I never knew her and don't go to AG, I go to South Charlotte Middle. But I saw on a locker at my school a few days ago, someone wrote "RIP Sloan Chambers" and I got curious. But God has shown the world how a 14 year old girl can really be strong and impact others, as she has me.

Mr. and Mrs. Chambers, I was truly blessed to spend the day Sloan visited Charlotte Christian with her. I was so proud to have her by my side, getting to know her all day. We continued talking after she was diagnosed, and I have made the decision that I have never met a person with a more golden heart than Sloan. I will never forget the day she sent me a text message, saying, "Mere I refuse to quit. I'm gonna fight and I'm gonna fight hard. I might just fight so hard i scare the cells right outta my body.(: " She truly was an angel sent from the Lord. I loved her so much and she will always be a part of me! I'll be praying! (:

Mr and Mrs Chambers, I never got a chance to meet her personally. I attended AG also but I was a year ahead of her. Though we never met she seemed to have the warmest and biggest of hearts and I'm sure she did. She was the happiest person despite dealing with the sickness. Keeping you in my prayers always.

I do not know your family and I did not know your daughter but the story of your daughters passing touched me. I am so very sorry for your loss. I just recently lost my grandfather this past weekend. I pray you and your family will find peace in the fact that she will suffer no more. And to her mother, the transfer you gave her gave her more time to with you all. Dear Dr. and Mrs. Chambers,
Our deepest and heartfelt condolences to you at this time. Your daughter's passing has a profound effect on us as we are also parents of an only child, our daughter Sydney - born about a month after Sloan. Not having ever met Sloan (nor you), she must have been a beautiful person...... you can see that in her eyes.
It's just unimaginable to us how challenging your life must have been - since she was diagnosed and then throughout. To that end, you will be in our prayers tonight praying for your strength. God bless.
Sincerely yours,
Ray and Rosanne White

Dr. and Mrs. Chambers,
I was so shocked to see the news about Sloan in the Roanoke Times today. I still remember Sloan's beautiful smile from when I taught music at North Cross. There are no words that can adequately express the sadness that I feel. Please know that so many hold you and your family in their thoughts and prayers.

I know no words can comfort you in your time of grief. But memories can ease the pain. Sloan was my JK buddy at North Cross when I was a senior and I remember her always very happy to see me with a huge smile on her face. I took her to chuck- e- cheese and I still have my rock that she painted for me when I graduated. I will always remember that little girl that had the BIG bows in her hair. Kate and Labron, I am so very sorry for you loss. May God lead you in this time of grief.

I'm not sure of your beliefs, but I take comfort in knowing that we will reunite with our loved ones one day.

I know this is a time of great grief and relief. My constant prayer for Sloan was for peace and relief of her pain. Although I never personally met her, she was my daughter's classmate and I worked with Kate as a volunteer at AG Middle. I have kept up with the family's struggles and triumphs through Caring Bridge. My prayer has not changed, I only transfer it's recipient. I know your faith is strong and you know she is having a big party in heaven and just waiting for you to show up. My thoughts will continue to be with you.

Although we do not know you, we have prayed for you and your family and our daughter, Graham, plays field hockey and Lax at Country Day and has followed Sloan through her friends that knew her. She was very sad to hear the news that Sloan had passed, but we are all grateful that she is no longer suffering and like you said in her obituary, she is living now! I lost my mom in January so I know she has one more angel up there looking out for her. We are so, so sorry for your tremendous loss and we pray God gives you all the strength and grace in the days, weeks and months ahead. You have a lot of people who care about you and are grieving your loss as well.
