Ita Cheres Klenicki January 9, 1927 - January 15, 2012 Norwich - Ita Klenicki, 84, of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, and formerly of Norwich died Sunday, January 15 in the comfort of her home with her beloved granddaughter at her side. Ita was born in Kurenitz, Poland and as a young teenager, escaped a labor camp and survived the Holocaust hiding in the countryside, with her two sisters and infant brother. Following the war, while in a Displaced Persons Camp in Leipime, Germany, she married the love of her life, Sam Klenicki, in 1947. The couple followed friends to Canada, and migrated to Norwich in 1955. Ita and Sam owned and operated the Preston Supermarket from 1961 - 1977, and she became an active member in the Jewish community, both as a member of Brothers of Joseph Synagogue, the Sisterhood, and as a lifetime member of Hadassah. They retired to Florida in 1987, where they created a new community of cherished friends, and delighted in hosting their grandchildren for frequent vacations. Ita is survived by her three children: Barry Klenicki of Newton, MA; Sonia Biber of Norwich, and Sylvia Kier of New York City, and by her six devoted grandchildren. They will all fondly remember her as a strong matriarch, loving caretaker, and the best cook they will ever know. Ita was predeceased by her husband Sam, who passed away in 2001. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00PM Wednesday, January 18 at the Church & Allen Funeral Home: 136 Sachem Street, Norwich. Burial will follow in the Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery #3 in Preston. Shiva will be observed Wednesday directly following the burial, and again Thursday at 7PM at the home of Sonia and Hyman Biber: 19 Sherwood Lane in Norwich. Dear Klenicki Family ~
It was so sad to hear of the recent loss of your Mom. She was such a beautiful person. Ita and Sam were customers of mine, at a local bank in Norwich, CT. When she walked to the store and went by the bank office window, she always made it a point to wave or stop in and just say hello. Your parents were both lovely people and were very nice to me and my Mom. May she rest in peace, along with Sam and my parents!
Sincerely,
Nancy Behlke Culver
