Freddie mentored a lot of the kids that I taught and coached at Tampa Bay Tech from 1998 to 2001. He was a huge supporter of our kids, our program and myself as a coach. There were many long hot practices and in between drills or during a water break I'd look up and see Freddie standing there (usually by himself) and just watching. I would always invite him onto the practice field and he'd always decline (I don't want to interfere with what you're doing Coach). By far the most honest, caring and humble former professional athlete that I have ever met. Freddie made a positive impact in whatever he attached his name to... A GOOD NAME IS TO BE MORE DESIRED THAN GREAT RICHES - FAVOR IS BETTER THAN SILVER AND GOLD! Thank you for your support & wisdom over the years. God bless you Mr. Solomon!

I remember listening to the radio in Sumter SC when Freddie was the Sumter QB, and they were playing my HS, Hillcrest. Hillcrest had another future NFL player...Henry Marshall. Freddie won the day...I think he scored 6 times! Then I got to watch him in Tampa...what a great player and from what I hear a Great man!

As a University of Tampa alumnus, I met Freddie several times at school and watched him QB the Spartans in some very exciting games. We had some good laughs at the post office when someone would call HIS name and we both turned around. A true gentleman who will be missed by so many. My prayers go out to his family. RIP

I had the opportunity to work with this wonderful role model for our inner city youth while working with Hillsborough County 4-H. He would stop by our office to tell us where we needed to organize new clubs for "his kids." He taught the young people that they could be whatever they wanted to be as long as they were willing to work hard. He had high standards for all of them and they loved him for it. Freddie, often would drop by the office with a check to send kids from the inner city to 4-H Camp. Many of these kids had never been out of Tampa. Freddie had a heart of goal and never wanted recogniton for the things that he did for others. I feel sure God looked down at all the wonderful opportunities he had made possibe for the kids and said "Well done good and faithful servant, it is time for you to come home." I will always remember Freddie and hearing him say as he would leave our office, "Stay Sweet." I am so sad that my friend has left us on earth and will look forward to some day seeing him in Heaven. My heart goes out to his wife, Dee, who he always refered to as his girlfriend when he gave donations. I know her heart is heavy and can only hope as she reads what people are saying about her husband will in some small way ease the pain a little. My prayers are with her.

Raw talent wise, the greatest football player South Carolina has ever produced, and a humble servant of his people. I will be speaking at Frank Small's foru year anniversary memorial service which will take place right after Freddie's today in Sumter,SC. The two were best buddies at Sumter High and at the University of Tampa, and continued to play football together there. They had nicknames for each other...Freddie's nickname was "Smoke" and Frank's nickname was "Dick".

I met Freddie at University of Tampa, when a few of my homeboys from Tarpon Springs(spongers) joined him in 1972 as a Spartan. I used to skip school to see Freddie practice I was 15y/o at the time He told me in that very soft spoken voice of his. That I could come to the games& see him play, if I went to school made good grades he would pay for my ticket. At this time he was the MAN of TU. He had the effect of getting you to do what was right and doing your Best at it, &With a smile. He always followed the rules and want you to do the same.It was not just about football with him. He would say you need to have an education something you can always fall back on cause, you can't play football all your life. Granted I am female.I just loved the way he so sweetly played the game, He was Fabulous Freddie,Fast Freddie, Honest Freddie,& Smiling Freddie. He was all he could be, and that's all he wanted from the next person. His game said it all, but when Freddie spoke everyone listen. He was soft spoken but his word came over loud, clear, and meaningful. He always smiled and you would to if you ever had contact with him. At this time of loss, May you all know, His Compassion, His Grace, and His Love.May the love of God surround his Family during this time of sorrow. You're in my thoughts and prayers. He is the Greatest and will always be, cause he touch so many lives in his crossing, Thus his passing for ever living on.

To Delilah Jeffers-Solomon and the Solomon family. We send our deepest sympathy. We were blessed to have angels like Freddie in our lives. In the early years of his legacy, he had you standing by his side. Take solice in the fact that he is still with us in the many hearts he has touched and the virtual book he has written for us to live by. What would he have said? What would he have done? One person CAN make a difference as he certainly has.

How many people can say they got a chance to throw touchdown passes to 'Fabulous' Freddie Solomon? Well, I can. Of course it was on a sandlot in Sumter. S. C., our hometown. The last few times, Freddie was in the tenth grade and I was in the eighth. Even back then all the kids in the neighborhood were amazed at his blazing speed. But even more amazing was his engaging and energetic personality. I was enthralled with Freddie Solomon. He was the big brother I never had. When I left Sumter shortly afterwards and moved to Killeen, TX because of my dad's military career, I only got a chance to see him in person a few more times, never as an adult. But I rooted for him throughout his distinguish NFL career. The World lost a good man Monday, February 13, 2012. As one version of that famous quote attributed to Edmund Burke states, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

I will miss and I mourn my childhood friend. I love you Freddie.

A Hero (not just mine) - One of the best men I ever knew. I was lucky enough to have a relationship, and not just a fondness of a greatness. Beyond the success of his athleticism (which brought me in as a fan), he continued to "wow" me as a member of my community. He was so fun to watch and to be a part of that era (UT, at Tampa Stadium) is unforgettable. Later, in my life, I found out my Grandfather - in - Law (Julio McnNenney) was one of the first QBs at UT and to watch Freddie succeed was just another bonus.
Our freindship continued
Continuing to watch his "greatness" in the NFL, just brought pride to us (Spartans and the entire Tampa Family, and My dad , "Mike", and his freind Bernie Epstein). These are the men that introduced me to Freddie, and I was able to continue our friendship as adults. He has been an incredible influnece on many, but I want you to know, he made an incredible impact on ME. I want to share eveything, but there isn't enough space - Much love to Dee, and I will miss you FREDDIE - Missing you Already, but now you can hang with Mike and Al , and of course Bernie and Betty - Watch Out !!!!!!

Freddie Solomon was one of a kind. I remember when some of the Miami Dophins, Larry Little and those guys would call him "Casper". The name of the friendly ghost. Oh, how Freddie laughed. He had a great sense of humor and then went out and kick butt on the field. Those were the great days with Freddie in Miami. Thanks for the memories. Now, go get the true crown where love, peace and joy will last forever with the KING!
To the family, we trust God will take care of you until you see Freddie again.

Freddie Solomon is gone but not forgotten. I first met Fred in 1972 when Tampa and Kent State played in the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Kent alumni and football supporters stayed at the same hotel with the Tampa team and it was really an awesome time. It was at that time that I met John Matuzak, as he and Freddie played together at Tampa. Freddie kidded me about John during that week. Needless to say, Tampa beat us. So goes the game of football. As his football career moved ahead, Freddie was always gracious amd friendly, and took the time to sign autographs for kids and talk to fans.

Rest in peace Freddie. Go to the great football field of white and enjoy another game, with those who are waiting for you. Your family will miss you but will remember your courage, your love of life, your love of kids, and your commitment to living life to the fullest - to the end. Your presence was a gift in our lives.

May the white light of peace and the love of angels be with your family, the teams, the community, the kids and those who lives you touched.

Deepest sympathy is sent to the Solomon family. I remember Freddie when he was the star quarterback of the University of Tampa football team. Tampa Stadium was small, and UT was as well--everyone knew everyone. I was the youngest cheerleader of the squad always rooting for the Solomon-Wakefield connections. Freddie was a genuinely kind person. You knew just by meeting him that Freddie would go places and make a difference in the world. He had that special and remarkable gift.

I was one of Freddie's early coaches at Lincoln High School. It was evident at an early age, he was a talented athlete. We talked of his needs to be prepared academically to have some choices when he graduated. I left to go to Graduate School and my career took a turn.I kept up with his career and last saw him during the week of the College All Star Game and we talked as we walked around Evanston, Illinois. It was evident that his "greatness" exceeded his football prowess. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Oh what a great man you were and yet for all of your greatness you were so reachable and so humble. But that's what made you great because for you Freddie, the world was more about the have not's than the have's. You gave, I mean you gave it all to those young kids-always caring about another life, making sure they knew what is right from wrong and always out front leading. It's been years since we've spoken but I'll always remember those chats as moments that I call highlights in my life. I wish that I might have had one more talk, one more chat with you but my dear friend I am content with just simply having known the Freddie most people don't know. My life is fuller because of you and the examples you set for others to follow. Rest peacefully in the arms of the Lord, my friend. You fought the battle and won.

To a true Friend...Freddie was an outstanding quarter back at UT and I had the pleasure of sitting in my office at the old gym talking to you about your future in Pro Football which we all knew was going to happen.
You passed on at such a young age but the Good Lord had the Grace to let us have you these few years. I remember asking you how you ran so fast and you said "You'd run too if you saw all of those big guys coming after you." You were great on the field and off and will be missed in Hillsborough County in the years to come.

It was the Fall of 1971...Freddie's first season at UT. I joined the Spartans as a transfer from West Point. In 1970 I played against Johnny Rodgers, the Nebraska phenom who went on to win the Heisman. After the very first practice in Tampa, I figured out that Rodgers must have transfered to UT and assumed a new name. And he had gotten a little bit better!
At that very impressionable time in our life, who could have imagined that I and his other teammates would come to first see Fabulous Freddie -not as a superstar, but as a friend to "anyone he thought he could help". Freddie's life is the story of a man whose true greatness will live as an inspiration for all those touched by his gifted hands. I am honored to be one of those.

Sad to hear of Freddie's passing. I attended the U. of Tampa a few years before Freddie played there, but I remained a Spartan fan and saw many of his games. He was a remarkable player, and from everything I have heard, he was an even better person. After his pro career in San Francisco, he returned to Tampa and remained an active supporter of the university and a mentor to young people in the community. He will be missed by all his friends in the Tampa area and by everyone who enjoyed his football career.

Freddie was a very good person on the field, but he was a great person off the field with all he inspired with his comunity service. These communities you touched are going to miss you, as will we all.
