I knew Pete through highschool and watched his career at U of M. I last saw him at his office when visiting Ann Arbor many years ago. He was, as always, so kind, with that gentle strength that seemed to be his trademark. I have always remembered that quality, which was there even during highschool. He was a man who will be missed by all who knew him, however briefly.

I knew Pete in high school and then at Michigan in the dorm East Quad and then the fraternity we both joined. We learned to drink beer and how to play euchre. Pete of course was a great athlete and competitor supreme, but very humble. He was one of the kindest friend I ever had. I am sure he had a wonderful influence on many many people. Our continuing memory of Pete will continue to make us better people.

It's wonderful that Dan completed the trip for his dad. In 1965, our first year at U. of M., Pete and I roomed in East Quad with Charlie Casgrain and Charlie's record player. Our second year, 1966, we roomed at Phi Psi with Joe Kunsa and Joe's Big Ben Alarm Clock and pet duck. I remember Pete's parents. He was very tough and she was very nice and Pete had a great combination of those two qualities. I've told all our children and many friends about my college friend who drilled wells as a kid, played football at 200 plus pounds and wrestled at 167, was the best college wrestler in the country, and bailed me out of brawls in an Ann Arbor bar and a U.of M. basketball game. He was the toughest guy I've ever known, yet gracious and nice when years later, and very late at night, George Sinadinos (sp?) stood there in the Knight Cap and talked me into joining in a call to Pete. I'm sad that Pete passed away, but happily remember 1965, 1966, and Pete with Ann. Jack Hobey.

I was saddened to hear about Pete's life being cut way too short. From one the wrestling team members of the 1965 team I enjoyed seeing him once again at the induction hall of fame in Lansing. We communicated occassionally on facebook, I so regret not seeing him again since we did not live that far apart. You never know when a friendship can be taken away, cherish and take some time with those you meet.

Today, we celebrated Pete's exceptional life with his family and friends. It was a sad time but still a good time to remember all the good Pete did for all of us. He was a great friend to so many people. Our memories are so full of the good times-cards, dinners, riding. We'll miss you, Pete.

Pete was a rare person deserving in absolute unreserved respect. He balanced drive and determination with humour and charm and my time spent with him was a privilege but sadly cut short. He will live long in the memory and has set standards that few will meet. He remains an inspiration to me and that will not change.
Our thoughts are with all his family and friends, and of course especially Sue.

Pete was a wonderful guy....one of the best you would ever meet. He was the most self-disciplined and driven guys I have ever known and possessed many outstanding qualities...great dancer, computer expert, voracous reader, top notch cyclist and always willing to help out and do more than his share anytime. He brought 100% to everything he did. I value the time I spent with Pete and will miss him greatly. His loss has left a huge void in our community; he meant a lot to all of us.

To the Cornell family and extended relatives. Pete was such a good guy and I was so sad to hear of this news. He was a legend to many of us in Ann Arbor for his leadership, his family, and of course, his fierce desire to excel. He will be deeply missed. Jim LaPointe and family

I had the honor of being on the Michigan wrestling team while Pete was a senior and captain. Pete was a leader in the mold of our legendary coach, Cliff Keen, never bragging, always giving his best, setting an example in sport and in life. His record as a premiere athlete speaks for itself. His merit as a person is reflected in the profound way he influenced those with whom he came in contact. I am grateful to have been a friend and teammate. So long, captain.

My condolences to Pete's family and close friends. I knew Pete for several years when he worked at One on One Athletic Club. He was a friend and always someone pleasant to visit with. I would occasionally see him around town (Ann Arbor) and he always went out of his way to say hello. He truly was a great guy!
It was a true pleasure to know him.

It has been a very difficult week; I am still shocked and want to express my sadness in regards to the events of last week. Pete and I met in student council our Junior year at Lansing Everett. We dated, and married three years later while students at Michigan. During our 19 year marriage, we raised Amy and Dan; I am very proud of the outstanding adults they have become. They, in turn, are raising four terrific grandchildren: Sarah, Hannah, Alice, and Laura. Pete and I have remained friends throughout the years. He has been an inspiration to many "to work hard to reach their goals." He has been a strong individual, considerate of others, and successful in his endeavors. Dave and I will miss seeing him at family celebrations and gatherings. Anne Taylor

I met Pete in the early 70's and the one outstanding thing about Pete is that the sun always shined in his smile. I am sorry to see that this light and wonderful guy will not be here in person to brighten our days. I will carry that light in my memory of Pete.

Pete was a gentle giant of a man. His strength of will, determination and power made him a hero in our little cycling community and loved by us all. He will be sorely missed, but his spirit will always be with us, doing that 'long pull' at the front of the pack.. Our deepest heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and Sue.

Pete was a leader. In everything he did, he was always out front. In cycling, he pulled us along, always focused on the goal. To those of us he left behind, we will be forever grateful for the gifts that he gave us.

From our hearts to yours, our deepest sympathy for your family's loss. We are heartbroken to know that Pete is no longer with us here in this life. Pete will be missed by so many, his family, friends, colleagues, teammates, riding partners, dance friends, and all those he touched with his kindness, warmth and charm.
Pete was a very driven, focused and hardworking man who was also kind, loving, generous, and an inspiration to all. My children and I spent seven years together with Pete-laughing, traveling, dancing, biking, swimming, reading, playing games, camping in the backyard, UofM football games and wrestling meets, motorcycle riding on the Harley and that Boss Hoss, and so much more. I will never forget how Amy's “little” girls loved to come and spend the night with us and the family BBQ's over at Dan and Jen's, swimming, playing and having fun! Especially, reading stories to the grandchildren, my favorite “I'll Love You Forever”.
Pete remained very dear to us, encouraging and proud of my children as they grew up and reached for their own goals. He helped them learn to reach beyond their fears and accomplish their goals in life. He is missed and loved.
Most of all, I know how much he loves and how very proud he is of his children, Amy and Dan, and all of their accomplishments thus far and yet to be achieved. He loves his granddaughters, Sarah, Hannah, Alice and Laura, always proud of them and the beautiful young ladies they are, all of their accomplishments and who they will become.
"May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. May the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand."

My condolence to the Cornell family. As a former Ann Arbor resident (I worked at UofM when Pete wrestled there) and as an ex high school wrestler and a bicyclist myself, I personally share the family's grief. I read in the newspaper where Don Cornell will finish his father's ride. Since I now live in Georgia I would like to participate in that ride to memorialize his life and love of physical activities. I'm sure other riders will also come forward.

I rode with Pete back in the late 70's and early 80's. We shared many a good times in our combined passion for fitness. He was an amazing friend and athlete. We lost touch but my world will be a bit emptier now knowing that he is not here. If heaven has bikes he will be an angel on a bike. If not, he will ask God for one.

I wish all the strength in the world to Pete's family and friends. I met Pete when he was my agent for buying my first house in 1984. While out house-hunting he told me he wanted me to see a certain intersection. It was Nixon/Bluett. Great sense of humor and nice guy. At my closing my bank would not release the funds for 24 hours so Pete lent me several thousand dollars to close. When I paid him the next day he said he could read people and that he wasn't worried about me. When we won a state softball tourney he was the first to call me. What a guy. We were lucky to know him.

Dad
you were the strongest person I knew and it is hard to believe that you aren't here anymore. You seemed to be "superman" and there wasn't anything that could defeat you.
Everytime I ride my bike I will think of how much you loved doing it and how dedicated you were.
I wish the girls could known you better and seen you more - although they are both just like you - smart, strong, loving and dedicated. I know you were so proud of them and they will carry your legacy on with them.
If I am 1% of the person you were I will be proud. I love you and will carry your spirit with me always

I wish the girls had gotten to know you more and I know how proud you were of them. They will carry your legacy on - they are just like you - smart, strong, loving and determined.
I know that one of your greatest fears was to grow old and not be able to things that you loved anymore. I am grateful that you were still able to pursue your dreams and that at least you died doing what you loved.

Hey Baby you left me way too soon. This wasn't supposed to happen to Superman, and the CCBC's ‘Big Dog'. Your cycling buddies are crying their eyes out. We had so much more to do, places to go, and bike rides waiting for us. Who will I draft now that you are gone? Who will I dance with? Who will teach me more about my computer and fix it when I mess it up? I want to hear you sing to me, I want to hear your laugh again. I want to make your gazpacho soup you love. I want to play cards with you again. I want to watch you play Jeopardy and yell out the right answers. Buddy's been working on a new trick to show you and is waiting for you to hold him in bed at night. He's still sleeping on your t-shirt. His heart is broken, my heart is broken. I'm so thankful you didn't feel any pain or suffer. Please know that I loved you and I will miss you forever. Thank you for teaching me to dance, for teaching me so much about my computer. Thank you for giving me your heart and your soul. I am blessed and honored to have had you in my life even though it was way too short of a time.
Until we meet again, for all of eternity, I will forever be your, Susie Q.

For Pete's family and Sue my heartfelt condolences in this time of great sadness. I wrestled Pete twice when I was at Ohio State, having the honor to beat him once and then getting thumped the next time we met. As a sophomore he pinned, in the 1967 NCAA tournament, our Ohio State defending 167-pound national champion in 29 seconds, a record that may still stand as the fastest NCAA tournament pin. He was the toughest guy I ever wrestled and--off the mat--was undoubtedly one of the finest gentleman and friendliest opponent I ever knew. We had recently re-established contact after 45 years and I can truly count him as a dear friend.

For those of us who love to cycle, we looked to Pete for inspiration. He didn't just gear up and turn a time or two; he made tracks! He planned, and then he executed the plan. We listened with rapt attention when he spoke of his journeys. I take heart......and am grateful......that he was doing what he absolutely loved to do--adventuring on his bike amongst close friends. Those who looked up to him, aspired perhaps to be more like him and venture forth with such bold confidence, will always treasure the example he set......and the man he lived to be. To his family and to Sue, I wish you to know this Coastal Cruiser cyclist is just bereft!

Pete set examples we all wished to follow. He did what he loved. His passion for riding and the challenges he faced left us all in awe. He will be in our hearts and on our mind as we bike the high mountains in France. He will be with us all the way. We will miss you. Sue, our hearts go out to you.

In spite of being the same age, Pete was my role model. He had the physical and mental toughness of an elite Olympic athlete. But mostly I'll remember my good buddy as a great friend and gentlemen.

I was a classmate of Pete's at Everett High School. Pete was so kind and humble. I am sending strengh to his family and loved ones that in their grief they can find peace in knowing that he left such an impression on so many people.

My Uncle Pete was a GREAT uncle. When I was little and he hugged me I felt very special. I watched him and learned. He taught me how to ski. He was a rascal and a tease! He was the strongest man I knew and would watch on the side lines as all the boys would try to wrestle him down - at the same time! He was a wild "Marauder" around Wixom Lake and the family cabin in West Branch. Many a weekend my brother and I awaited the family to arrive from Ann Arbor- climbing trees to see if we could see them coming yet. He was a great inspiration to me...and credit his accomplishment of the first in our family to graduate from college - to inspire me that I could do it too! I will miss you and I am sad you won't be there anymore.

Pete and I just graduated from our tricycle days when we met. He went on to much bigger bikes and bigger travels. He traveled with kindness, love, dry humor and as a gentleman. He can't be replaced, but he has left an example of how life should be lived. He was a great athlete and a successful business man, but much more important a wonderful human being. Pete is and always will be in my mind and heart. Mike Long

Pete was the greatest brother any sister could have had. He was so giving to anyone that need it. He was a brother and friend that no one can ever replace. Will miss you more than you would ever know. Love you Pete
