Mr. Marty was a caring and compassionate individual who enjoyed his life to the fulliest. While working out at the BREC fitness centers (Santa Maria & Warmack) Mr. Marty would always have an encourging word and insist that he "spot" me if the weights were to heavy. On many evenings while working out at BREC, Mr. Marty sopke to me about of his family and how happy he was to have them in his life, especially his wife and son. Mr. Marty was very proud of his son and wanted the best for him. Mr. Marty will be missed, but every time I enter into either of the fitness centers above, I know his spirit will be there. Mr. Marty thank, you for serving your country as well as protecting the public as a police officer. Most improtantly thank you for your friendship. "May the work he has done speak for him."

I met Marty at the beginning of 2011 at the BREC facility in Santa Maria when I was chosen as a participant in the Shapeup Show Down with WAFB, BREC, and OLOL. During the 6 mos that I was working out at that facility, I looked forward to seeing his smiling face. He was such a nice man, very personable, and always willing to help. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this time.

Marty was a work partner for BREC & we became good friends. He will be remembered for his calm & easy going demeanor. I always looked forward to his coming to work, so we could share a few moments of time to catch up on the week. He served his country, and the community with dignity. God bless! Coach Fred Allen

Marty and I rode together decades ago with the BRPD, and I have many warm memories. I was deeply saddened to learn of Marty's passing, and offer my most sincere condolences. I regret my work hours will not permit me to attend.

Hi. I'm Jay Jacobs, Marty's first cousin. Though it's probably been 27 years since I last saw Marty and before that, probably when we were both in our teens, I am sorry to hear of his passing and send my condolences to his family and friends in this difficult time.

Growing up, we saw each other regularly and it's really too bad that we didn't stay connected as adults, but at this time of sorrow, I'd like to celebrate Marty's life with a funny childhood memory.

Around 1958, there was a car dealer in Los Angeles selling Renault Dauphines. Since foreign cars at that time weren't all that well made, on his television commercials, he would slam the doors as hard as he could to show just how solid the car was built. So one day both our families were over at Eleanor and Bill VanGrove's (Marty's aunt and uncle), probably for a birthday. They had just purchased a new Ford Thunderbird, which was sitting in their driveway. So Marty (who was just a little older than me) and I started slamming the car doors, just like we had seen on television. The car's windows were down at the time and he and I slammed the car doors repeatedly, trying to outdo one another with the power of our slams. Now that was a sold car!

The next day, I remember my parents saying something about, “When Bill and Eleanor raised the windows in their car, both windows were broken and did we know anything about that?” I'm not sure how I answered and I don't know if Marty was asked the same question nor his possible answer, but I do know that I never repeated that car door slamming activity.

Rest in peace cousin Marty.
