Robert MacQueen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 10, 2013.

ROBERT H. MACQUEEN
Robert H. MacQueen died suddenly doing what he loved most, sitting at his desk at the family business. He was 77. Bob was born in Toledo, Ohio on October 15, 1936 to Hugh and Martha MacQueen. Bob graduated from Holland High School in 1954 and continued working with his father on the family farm. In 1956 he married his high school sweetheart, Marlene Szymanowski. In 1963 Bob took over the family farm after his father passed. He built a small 15 acre farm into a 200 acre apple orchard complete with farm market, wholesale packing facility, cider mill, bakery and gift shops. He was most proud of the state of the art washing, sorting, and packaging line which was newly installed. This business was his passion, second only to his family. Bob was very involved in his community throughout the years. He was instrumental in securing the land for the community park which is now today Strawberry Aces. He was past president of the Holland Strawberry Festival, a member of the Holland/Springfield Chamber of Commerce. Bob was also Past President of the Ohio State Horticultural Society, a member of the Fruit Growers Marketing Assoc., Mid-American Ag and Hort Services, U.S. Apple Assn, Lucas County Farm Bureau and the Ohio Produce Growers Marketing. He was and Entrepreneur and Business Excellence Hall of Fame Honoree and was awarded Honorary Ambassador to Aruba for his years of patronage to the island. Bob was a member of the American Quarter Horse Assoc. and a member of St. Joan of Arc Church.
Bob loved traveling, horse showing and family, especially spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Marlene; children Cindy (Sam) Kaiser; Jeff (Jodey) MacQueen; Lynn (Mike) Gorey; Bobby (Amy) MacQueen; grandchildren, Kara (Brad) Wilson; Arin, Zach (Allison) and Spencer MacQueen; Kasey (Richie) Gibson; Logan Gorey; Mallory MacQueen; great grandchildren, Kaiser Gibson and Jordi Wilson.
Friends and family will be received in the Neville Funeral Home, 7438 Airport Highway, Holland (419-865-8879) from 2-8 pm Tuesday where funeral services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday November 13, 2013. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider The Susan G. Komen For The Cure of NW Ohio.

Our family no longer live in the Toledo area, but we have fond memories of trips out to pick apples and purchase cider, donuts and other good things. Bobby was one of my many students when I was the computer teacher at Holland Elementary. Just last weekend friends of ours came to visit us. They asked what we wanted from Toledo. They brought apple cider and apple cider donuts from your store--our first request. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you!

Bob was my first real boss when I worked in the bakery on weekends and after basketball practice my senior year in high school back in 1995. He was an amazing person with an uncompromising work ethic and so supportive of the dreams of an 18 year old girl. He always took time to say hi and catch up when I would come and visit. May we all remember it is these small things that can make a big difference in other peoples lives. My thoughts go out to the family and the greater MacQueens Community - he will truly be missed.
