Passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2014. Age 91. Marian was born in Kalamazoo on March 15, 1923, the daughter of the late David and Lena (Schrier) VanHemel. She was a member of Hope Reformed Church. She was a Red Cross Gray Lady and volunteered for the Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital and Bronson Hospital. She was married to Theodore "Ted" Nickel on June 18, 1948; he preceded her in death on November 16, 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah L. (Michael) McDonald of Denver, CO; three nephews, Larry (Joyce) Houtman, Robert (Marian) Houtman and Lowell (Luella) Yonkman. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Frances Yonkman, Nellie Schipper and Henrietta Erickson. Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 PM on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street., where a memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, April 3, 2014. Chaplain Jim Wessing from Park Village Pines will officiate. Private graveside service will take place in Grand Prairie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Kalamazoo Gospel Mission, Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, Chosen People Ministries or Jews for Jesus.
