CLARA LUCY GIOVANNOLI (March 12, 1922-April 9, 2014) died peacefully Wednesday in her home in Ignacio; she was 92. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert, and her two sisters, Angela Cozzo and Gloria Cozzo-Adams and by her Grandson Christopher. She is survived by her five loving children: David and his wife Sharon of El Sobrante; Richard and his wife Caryn of Sebastopol; Dennis and his wife Laura of San Anselmo; Thomas of Santa Barbara; and Teresa Jensen and her husband Gary of Encinitas. She also leaves behind her devoted grandchildren: Gregory, Maia, Joseph, Alex, Robert, Maria, Gina, and her great grandchild, Vincenzo.
Clara was born in San Francisco’s North Beach and attended primary school in Dolgiani, Italy. She attended Presentation, Galileo High School and Girls’ High School in San Francisco. She and Robert moved to San Rafael in 1950, where they raised their five children. They moved to Sonoma in 1992, where Robert died in1995. Clara then relocated to Ignacio, where she completed her long and fruitful life.
Her last years were enjoyable and active. Up until a year before she died, she would briskly walk for miles in her neighborhood. She loved to shop and to cook, and to be with family. Her Granddaughter, Maia, was her major caretaker when she needed care. They would often go to the mall together where they would pop into See’s Candies for a sample (and maybe a little more!). The clerks there would sing to her in Italian. They knew her at the supermarket; they knew her at her favorite luncheon spot, La Toscana; they knew her all over the neighborhood. Everyone knew her as “Mama”.
A viewing will be held at Keaton’s Mortuary in San Rafael on Tuesday, April 22, at 5:00pm to be followed by a Vigil Rosary at 6:30pm. A requiem mass will celebrate Clara’s life on Wednesday at St. Raphael’s Church in San Rafael at 11:00am. Details and a link for flowers can be found: http:// www.keatonfunerals.com
