Margie Ellen Chappell Wood, 88, of 721 Body Road, Hertford, died Thursday, April 10, 2014 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
Mrs. Wood was born in Chowan County and was the daughter of the late James Herbert and Sarah Frances Bunch Chappell. A homemaker, she was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women, was active in the Perquimans Quilters, and for many years had decorated wedding and birthday cakes for those in the community. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her high school sweetheart and husband, John Elmer Wood Jr.; a sister, Geneva Chappell and her husband, Louis; two brothers, Edward Chappell and his wife, Sybil and Wallace Chappell and his wife, Dorrie Mae; and a brother-in-law, McCoy Phthisic.
Surviving are two daughters, Faye Meads and husband, Talmadge, of Elizabeth City and Candice Ellen Eley and husband, Sid, of Hertford; two sons, John E. Wood III and wife, Lynn, and Timothy Allen Wood and wife, Donna, all of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Beulah Phthisic of Tyner; a brother, Mayward Chappell and wife, Rita, of Hobbsville; 14 grandchildren, Dawn Gregory and husband, Dan, Talmadge Meads Jr. and wife, Darlene, Jennifer Meads, Clint Eley and wife, Tracy, Teddy Eley and wife, Ally, Catina Byrum and husband Jimmy, Laura Harkins and husband, Gragg, John Wood IV, Jeremy Wood and wife, Angela, Leslie Wood, Ashley King and husband, Erik, Jamie Partin, Amber Taylor and Marie Brady and husband, Jeb; and 17 great-grandchildren, Faith Byrum, Luke Byrum, Raven Harkins, Braxton Eley, Tanlee Eley, Beckett Eley, Braylon Eley, Maitlyn Gregory, Madisyn Gregory, Eli Gregory, Matthew Meads, Mitchel Meads, Jordan Wood, Ashland Wood, Barron King, Coby Sparrow, and Chase Brady.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, by the Rev. Toni Wood. A private burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the chapel service, and all other times at the residence.

Ms. Margie was a very talented lady! I'll always remember her cakes that were beautifully decorated, yet very tasty. A rarity to witness. Take care of each other and depend on God's strength to guide you.

My condolences and prayers to the entire family, and grateful wishes to the two daughters who spent so much of their family time in caring for Ms Margie as her health declined over the past years.
