Eugene Anthony "Chuck" Turowski, 56, lost his battle on Monday, April 14, 2014. His death is devastating to the members of the "Turowski Zoo", a collection of family, friends and animals that gathered often to celebrate the good things in life. He leaves behind his loving wife Kathleen (Summerville), daughter Caitlin, stepson Russ Sherlock (Kim), grandson Daniel Sherlock, adoring mother Dolores and sisters Eileen Taylor and Diana, Eugene was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Sr., in 1983. He was born and raised in North Chicago, but was a long time resident of Gurnee. After graduating from Northern Illinois University, Eugene became a loyal employee of Abbott Laboratories for over 33 years. He was an accomplished scientist in the diagnostics and process development divisions. He was instrumental in the development of the first AIDS test, saving thousands of lives by helping people detect the virus. He worked with dozens of infectious diseases, from West Nile, hepatitis and rubella. He saved Abbott millions of dollars in the processes he put into place. He continues to give back to society by the donation of his organs and tissues. Eugene's life will be honored Friday night from 5-8pm at Gurnee-Salata Funeral Chapel, 4190 Old Grand Avenue in Gurnee. Additional visitation will be held on Saturday morning at 10am at Salata's, with a service at 11am. Interment in the family plot at Ascension Cemetery will follow. A gathering of the Turowski Zoo is being planned. For information, 847-244-1155.
