Carl G. Pfeifer, 98, a resident of the Job Haines Home, Bloomfield, N.J., formerly of Montclair, N.J., died on Thursday, April 17, 2014.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Hugh M. Moriarty Funeral Home, 76 Park St., Montclair, N.J. Interment will follow at Mount Hebron Cemetery. Visitation is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service.
Carl was born and raised in the Vailsburg section of Newark, N.J. He enlisted in the Army during World War II, served in the Signal Corps and was trained as a Morse code operator. He was part of the initial wave of the June 1944 D-Day invasion, landing on Omaha Beach. He also served in the Philippines.
He met his future wife, Margaret Russo of Montclair, after the war, while recovering from tuberculosis in upstate New York. They were married in 1957. They initially resided in his family home in Newark, N.J., until permanently moving to Montclair.
Carl worked for the Fire Insurance Rating Bureau in Newark. He enjoyed painting, traveling and especially family.
Carl was predeceased by Margaret in 2006. He is survived by his stepson, Ron Naspo and Ron's wife, Diana. He had two grandsons, Chris of Freehold, N.J., and Leigh Naspo of Ingolstat, Germany, and five grandchildren, Connor and Logan of New Jersey, and Tyler, Louis and Sofia of Germany. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Robin Pfeifer Evans of Southampton, N.J.
