Charles Turner Obituary

Charles B. Turner, 79, died suddenly on May 10, 2014.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Rd., Livingston, N.J.
Charles was a lifelong resident of New Jersey, and a deeply devoted husband to Stephanie, the love of his life. Fifty years ago he convinced Stephanie to relocate from California to New Jersey, where they built their life together.
Charles graduated from Weequahic High School in Newark, N.J., the city of his birth. He went on to receive his B.A. from the University of Michigan, and earned his J.D. from the Harvard University School of Law.
He was a highly respected "old school" lawyer, who practiced his profession for more than 50 years.
Based in South Orange (Essex County), N.J., he appeared in courts throughout New Jersey.
For the last 20 years, he practiced law with his son, Andrew, which was a deeply rewarding experience for him in passing his careful craft and attention to the next generation.
Charles was also a gifted musician, who played cello nearly his entire life, and for many years with the Metropolitan Orchestra. He also enjoyed traveling the world with his wife and close friends.
He was the loving father of his three sons, Andrew, Jonathan (Melissa), and Fred (Deborah). He adored and took great pleasure in his four granddaughters, Julia, Natalie, Alexandra, and Lauren, who loved him just as much. Charles was close friends with his brother, Leon (Lola), and his children, who loved their uncle.
Charles was predeceased by his dear parents, Martha and Morris Turner.
He will be deeply missed by all of those he loved and touched.

Dear Stephanie and Family,
I got to know Charlie a little bit more at the Metropolitan Orchestra's first post season pot luck dinner last June and am very glad I did, and to meet you too. I'm sorry that Charlie and I didn't get more acquainted, but we did not sit near each other in the orchestra. While we missed him at our Fall and Winter concerts this season we are glad to know it was because he was traveling with you. I'm glad to have attended the service and saw at least four fellow orchestra board members there, including my co-chair, Rose Feldman. Rose has known Charlie for about 45 years and will miss his usual greeting: "Hi Rosie."
At our next board meeting I will propose that we do something in Charlie's memory, unless someone else beats me to it! I will make sure that our program shows the donations in Charlie's memory separate from our usual donor list for the time being. We very much appreciate that we were mentioned and are going to miss Charlie's playing with us. While not having Charlie play with us is a big loss for the orchestra, it is an even bigger loss for the members of the cello section. You are always welcome at our concerts. We hope to see you there.

To the entire Turner family,
I am deeply saddened by this heart wrenching news. Charles & I have had a professional relationship that has spanned over a decade. I enjoyed, and even looked forward to our tax related conversations. Imagine that! Charles was able to turn what is to most was an unpleasant subject into a lighthearted conversation which always left me with a smile. I will miss him dearly.

Stephanie,
What heartbreaking news. I am so sorry for you and your family. Charles was always a larger than life figure to me from my childhood years in Newark. So many hours at his home under the spirited tutelage of his mother; so many gatherings of family friends, and he, so graceful, and handsome, and wise and warm toward all. What a loss. My thoughts are with you, your boys, Leon and Lola.

Dear Stephanie and family,
I am so sorry I cannot be with you personally in this time of great sadness. I think of you often. And I think of Charles, wishing I had gotten to know him better. But distance didn't allow that. I will always remember his kindness, concern for others, and his dry sense of humor. Remember the happy loving times. They are all that is important.
Love,
Dave Hill

FOR ONCE IN HIS LIFE CHARLES SHOWED INCREDIBLY POOR TASTE LEAVING US TOO SOON. CLEARLY GOD HAS NEED OF A HUMBLE ATTORNEY OF IMPECCABLE ETHICS, MORALS AND CHARACTER. GOD KNOWS, HE HAS LEFT US AN UNBRIDGEABLE VOID.
