Gregory Boyd Fletcher
KANNAPOLIS - Greg Fletcher, a well-known women's volleyball official for high school and college games, has died at age 61. He died unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, from injuries sustained in a fall creating a devastating brain injury at the Disney Sports Center at Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orlando, Fla., while refereeing a volleyball game.
Greg was born March 19, 1953, in Cabarrus County, the son of the late Boyd Wilson Fletcher and Beulah Rogers Fletcher. He was a 1971 graduate of A.L. Brown High School.
After high school Greg served in the U.S. Air Force from 1974 to 1980 where he attained the Air Force Good Conduct Medal as well as other citations. While in service he was a photographic specialist.
Greg was a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, where he earned his Eagle Scout Award.
He was formerly employed with Orchard Electronics and for many years with Best Loading Services.
In addition to loving his family, he was a lover of sports and an avid Duke fan. Greg earned a PABO which is a national collegiate referee certification. He also had a USA regional certification as well as being an active member of the Triad Volleyball Athletics Association. He refereed college volleyball for the following conferences over the years: the ACC, the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), Southern, Big South, Peach Bell, Conference Carolinas and South Athletics.
A special Greg Fletcher Memorial Fund is being established by referee friends of various collegiate and high school associations. These scholarships will be awarded to various individuals pursuing volleyball in their futures.
Survivors include his two sisters, Cynthia F. Petrea of Kannapolis and Pamela F. Kerr of Matthews; his nieces, Jennifer K. Spear and Crystal P. Erwin; his nephews, Jason Petrea, Wesley Petrea, Christopher Kerr and Randy Petrea; three great-nephews; and three great-nieces.
Arrangements: The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 5 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, officiated by Rev. Kirk Tutterow. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church prior to the service.
