PORTVILLE - Ardythe Ann Nothem Weston, of 946 Olean-Portville Road, Portville, and San Diego, passed away Sunday (June 29, 2014) at Select Specialty Hospital in Johnstown, Pa.
Born on March 19, 1928, in Cherokee, Iowa, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Sim I. and Pearle M. Laase Jacobson. On Dec. 29, 1947, in Sioux City, Iowa, she married Aloysius "Al" Nothem, who passed away Sept. 13, 1994. On Oct. 5, 1996, in Portville, she married W. James Weston, who predeceased her in 2013.
Ardythe was a graduate of East High School in Sioux City, Class of 1945. She graduated from St. Bonaventure University with a bachelor's degree and was a recipient of the English Medal Award. She was assistant librarian for 10 years at the Olean Public Library.
An active participant in the arts, Mrs. Weston wrote a weekly family humor column for the diocesan newspaper, The Magnificat, for five years, and did occasional articles for the Olean Times Herald.
As an actress and singer, she appeared in the Theatre Workshop and the Warren, Pa., Library Summer Theatre. A former member of the Olean Community Chorus and the Keynote Chorus of Portville, she sang in church choirs, both at Sacred Heart Church in Portville and San Rafael Catholic Church in San Diego, but the love of her life always remained her family.
Surviving are four sons, Bruce Nothem of Rochester, William Nothem of Jamestown, Gregory Nothem of Portville and Andrew (Amber) Nothem of Las Vegas; two daughters, Barbara (Mark) Yaros of Somerset, Pa., and Sandra (David) Whalen of Williamsville; two stepchildren, Judy (John) Hoskins of Venice, Calif., and James (Terri) Weston of Eugene, Ore.; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a brother, Milford Jacobson of Milwaukee; a sister, Phyllis Flato of La Mesa, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Robert Jacobson, in 2000, Victor Jacobson, in 2002, and Wesley Jacobson, in 2002; and two grandsons, Andrew Mark Yaros, in 1984, and Justin Michael Nothem, in 2006.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday (July 7, 2014) at the Sacred Heart Oratory, Maple Street, Portville. Father Gregory Dobson, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
Memorials may be made to the Al Nothem Memorial Endowment Fund at St. Bonaventure University, the Olean Public Library or the Portville Free Library.
