George Keith Bernhardt, 92, of West Hartford, CT died at his home on Wednesday, July 9, 2014. He was born on August 23, 1921 in Rensselaer, Indiana to the late George and Agnes Bernhardt. He graduated from Remington High School in 1939. He received an engineering degree from Perdue University in December, 1942. George came to Connecticut in January, 1943. He worked at Pratt and Whitney until the end of World War II. He spent the rest of his professional life as a sales and development engineer helping many companies develop chip less time saving machinery. This equipment has been used world -wide. George was the devoted husband to Rose (Dombkowski) Bernhardt for 51 years. She passed away in March, 2008. He leaves his two sisters, Mary Gottliebsen of Pennsylvania and Margaret Freeman of Colorado. He also leaves several nieces and nephews including his devoted niece Kathryn Breightner of Michigan. He also leaves his good friends Jackson Eno and Ray Couture. George and his family were so grateful for the exemplary care that he received from Beverly Headley which enabled him to remain in his home for the last seven years. During his long life, George helped many family members and friends to purchase homes or start their own businesses. His death diminishes us all. A graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery (Section 8) in West Hartford on Tuesday, July 15th at 11:00am. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, West Hartford has care of arrangements.

My name is Max Baumgardner. I was all of 21 when I moved from Indiana to Connecticut to work as a Junior Engineer at P&W Aircraft in 1956. Shortly after moving to Connecticut, I had an opportunity to move into a bachelor house with 5 other Engineers; Keith was kind of the master of the house-- we all very much liked Keith and followed the rules he set.I remember when Keith married Rose and moved out of the house. I moved out of Connecticut to Ohio-- then Illinois-- in 1959. But, as with all of Keith's many admirers, I remained in touch with him on many occasions-- though I only saw Keith one time after moving.
He was a wonderful Hoosier!

Keith was a great friend and mentor. He encouraged me to start my first company, and was there for me when I started my second company. I will miss him very much. Now he is in heaven with the love of his life, Rose.
