Joseph F. Roszka
WESTBROOK -- Joseph passed in peace on Monday, July 14, 2014, at the Springbrook Center in Westbrook to be with his beloved wife Loraine who predeceased him in January 2005.
He was the born on Oct. 18, 1928, the son of Bernice Kimbar and Joseph I. Roszka. He grew up in the Polish neighborhood of Portland speaking several languages before learning English when he attended grade school in Portland. In his youth he shipped out on the tankers that would come into the Portland harbor and traveled all over the world. He had many stories that he would share of his travels, the sights that he saw and the experiences he had as a young man. He served in the Army stationed in Alaska during the Korean Conflict in the 1950s.
He married Loraine Hainer Thornton on June 30, 1963, and they were married for 41 years before her death in January 2005. He was employed as a welder for Bancroft & Martin, Arrowhead Space, Huntington Beach, Calif., Pine State ByProducts and Golten Ship Repair before retiring due to poor health.
He was an avid reader and loved books, sometimes reading two-three books per week. He kept current on the news and read every paper he could get his hands on and was well versed in all that was happening in the Portland area and throughout the world. He loved fishing and would often spend a morning or afternoon on one of the piers in Portland fishing always according to the tide schedule. He gave away most all of the fish he caught, but once in awhile he would bring home the fish to be cooked for the family cat, Howard.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Zanar and Charles and sisters, Nellie, Mary, Annie and Pauline. He is survived by a son, Frank Roszka of Florida, a daughter, Sheila R. Barret; as well as his step-children, Cheryl T. Jensen (Eric) of South Portland and Michael D. Thornton (DeAnne) of Centreville, Va.; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces.
A time of remembrance and scattering of his ashes will be held at a later date this summer. Arrangements are made by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland.
