Elizabeth Anderson Goggin, age 100, passed away on August 28. She had been a resident of Los Alamos for 24 years.
She was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota on May 16, 1914 to Arthur Anderson and Dorothy Mitchell Anderson. The family later moved to St. Paul, MN where she spent most of her early years. She attended Antioch College in Ohio where she got her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the 30's during the depth of the Depression. In 1941 she married Richard X. Goggin, with whom she had two sons, and lived in San Francisco, CA during the 1940's. When the marriage ended in divorce she moved back to St. Paul, MN and then to Minneapolis, MN where she lived the majority of her adult life. In Minneapolis she taught Special Education classes in inner city schools for nearly 20 years.
She traveled extensively in the 1970's taking freighter cruises to, among other places, South America, the Orient, Alaska, Mexico, Yugoslavia, and Australia. She was an avid reader, walker, weaver and classical music lover.
Elizabeth moved to Los Alamos in 1990. She had worked in a Friends of the Bookstore connected to the Minneapolis Public Library in the downtown Minneapolis area for a number of years after she retired from teaching. She used that experience to spearhead the creation of the Friends of the Mesa Public Library bookstore at the old location. In 1998 she was honored at the New Mexico State Library Association's Awards Banquet with the Amigo Award.
She is survived by sons: David (Judy) of Los Alamos and Stephen (Kate) of Ithaca, NY. Grandchildren: Beth of Anchorage, AK; Jennifer (Jo) of Wolfeboro, NH; Jay of San Francisco, CA; Matthew of Chicago, IL; Samantha of Albuquerque, NM.
