Richard L. Bowes, 73, beloved husband of Carol Boughton Bowes, was taken too soon on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Yale's St. Raphaels Campus. Richard was born in New Haven on January 5, 1941, son of the late Esther Hemstock and Edward Bowes. He was a life-long resident of Hamden. Richard was a Vietnam veteran serving in the United States Navy. He retired from Yale University as a truck driver after 45 years of service. In his early years, Richard enjoying playing his bass guitar and upright bass and was a member of many bands as well as a member of the Musician's Union. He continued to enjoy music throughout his life. He was a big car buff and enjoyed watching both the races and auctions. Richard was also an avid sports fan and loved watching his Giants, Red Sox and UCONN Women's Basketball teams. Richard was a quiet, gentle man with a big heart and overly generous spirit who was always there for Carol's large family who lovingly welcomed him 45 years ago and feels a great loss at this time. Those closest to him got to appreciate and enjoy his dry humor. He was a devoted and loving husband of 44 wonderful years who will be dearly missed especially by his wife, Carol Boughton Bowes, his brother, Alfred Bowes (Audrey) of Wallingford, and sisters, Shirley Thielgard of Wallingford, Florence Bowes-Lewis (Al) of Hawaii and Victoria Hay of Rhode Island. He was pre-deceased by brothers Edward Bowes and Donald Bowes. His family will receive relatives and friends at the the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford, CT on Tuesday, September 9, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. Interment will be private.
